#182: Turkey and Stuffing Potato Chips
Continuing their talk about the Turkey, Bob and Brian discuss some more unusual holiday meal substitutes. How bout an entire Thanksgiving meal in a bag?
Bill, I'm not an expert at keeping my pipe lit either, but I am getting the
hang of it after 10+ years. Sometimes pack more tobaccy in to get a longer
smoke, and that's when I fail. My take on the rim: I don't give a rodent's
posterior if I happen to blacken the rim. I don't do it on purpose though.
But it's briar, it's not going up in flames. It's not a priceless artifact.
It's a pipe, and I smoke it. People who baby their pipes are best off being
collectors, not a pipe smoker. Just my take. :)
It is not messing up it is just your way of enjoying your tobacco. I would
say pack a little more than you normally do, but not enough where you do
not have good air flow. Light your match and hold it over the center of
your bowl and give 2-3 really good sized pulls to get the tobacco lit. From
then on you have to constantly keep taking pulls to ensure the tobacco
stays lit and forms a cherry. It takes awhile to get the hang of and it is
not 100% guaranteed because every pipe is different.
I'm lousy at keeping my pipe lit, so can't help you there. I CAN tell you
that burning the edge of the bowl comes from not holding the edge even
while you're firing the pipe. The flame, ANY flame, always burns upwards.
Unless you keep the edge of the bowl absolutely horizontal, you'll catch
the flame with it. Pay attention to the edge of the bowl as you light.
Sometimes you need to raise the pipe to an unnatural angle to level the
edge. If the edge is flat level, it won't catch the flame.
I would guess your tobaccos is rather moist. Dry it out. That should keep
it lit. Puff more often, maybe your don't puff enough. Or you pack too
tight. Get a different pipe and try that. For edge burning, don't use a
match, use a more controlled flame like a butane lighter and shoot the
flame into the bowl, also don't fill the pipe to the rim, leave a quarter
of an inch at the top, that way you don't have the flame close to the
rim... But matches are probably the problem. : )
Great video...Maybe you could make a video of how you smoke your pipe we
could then maybe pick up on something you maybe doing which may be
detrimental to your pipe smoking.. Only thing I can suggest right now is
pack lighter & maybe not to tamp to hard just enough to get the ember on to
the fresher tobacco & ash dumping. I don't know if this will help your
situation or not but I hope in some way this has been of some assistance to
you. Cheers Colin.
Man, I'm still trying to learn not to get the rim of the pipe burned. I've
noticed some do it more than others but nothing seems to stop it once it
starts. (smooth rimed pipes). I think thats now why I smoked more
rusticated pipes. We may not all be great pipe smokers but at least your a
hell of a good eater my friend haha. Cheers, James
some time the tobacco goes out if its packed too loose or if you packed it
too tight and didnt cherry it well enough. but ive also found that some
pipes, no matter how hard you try, will not stay lit, so keep trying new
ones until you find one you really like. plus it gives you a reason to buy
more pipes!!
@boson360 Thanks for the feedback! I've tried packing a lot; I've tried
packing less. Doesn't matter. Can't keep the damn thing lit. I agree on the
blackened rims. All of my pipes are scorched, and I don't see how anyone
can smoke a pipe without burning the rim. Just the cost of doing business.
Best, Bill
I have had some success with soaking my tobaccos in gasoline the night
before I smoke them. Helps them burn all the way to the bottom of the bowl
in one light. I have stopped the burning around the rim of my bowl by
having all of my pipe bronzed. I hope that helps (I am in the same boat as
you!)
I am definitely NOT an expert, but you could try a dab of saliva around the
rim of the bowl before lighting to protect it from charring. Also, maybe
dry the tobacco a little and start with a looser pack. But again, what do I
know? I am a new guy to pipes. Best regards - Cort.
Sounds like to me that either your pipe or tobacco was manufactured on a
Monday.Switch to a hand rolled cigar and when you have mellowed out a
bit,go back to a trusty pipe and tobacco.I dont trust anything made on a
Monday except my mother's cooking!Hang in there Bill.!!!!
My opinion is this: some tobaccos stay lit easier than others. The best
advice here is to not worry about it. I relight my pipe several times. I
don't puff away light a freight train. I like a nice relaxing smoke and the
pipe goes out on its own. Simple as that.
Bill, another fantastic video. I wait with anticipation for each new one
you post! Have you found your grandchild yet? Keep 'em comin'. I feel your
pain about the leftovers:) I suffer the same maladies you do with your pipe
and can offer no advice.
Got to agree with Lashermans, it's probably just soot building up on your
rim - happens to everyone. Just give it a real good clean. Ps, at the end
of the day, if youve got more matches, who caress if it goes out every now
and then?
@1fatbastard Thanks for the advice. I've used matches, and I've used
lighters. No matter what, I burn the rim. Also, moist or dry, the tobacco
won't stay lit. And I puff like an sob. Oh, well, I can only keep trying.
Best, Bill
@asianhombre Thank you. I don't relight several times but ALL the time. I
often don't get a minute worth of puffing on one light. I may go through a
box of 250 kitchen matches in a day of three or four pipes. Best, Bill
You can count that kid as collateral damage....he shouldnt have gotten in
the way. :) Dont give up on the pipe, keep trying different methods till
you hit the right one.
Hahaha, you're forgetting to add the lighter fluid to the tobacco before
you light it. I guarantee that if you add some lighter fluid, that pipe is
gonna stay lit.
@Matches860 I love Gentlemen Callers (the tobacco, that is). There's
something in the aroma that is very nostalgic for me. Must be in the deer
tongue? Best, Bill
@mrdougc905 I have four Zippo pipe lighters, but I have been using matches
exclusively of late. I'll switch back to the Zippos for awhile. Thanks.
Best, Bill
@astroman2112 Thank you for your response. And you're right. As much as I
love pipe smoking, I love eating more. Best, Bill
