Hi i have an tetra whisper micro filter that came with my aquarium is Item
#25799 and #25807 its 115 volts . My concern is this filter goes inside the
aquarium every thing the motor and the power cord that is connected to the
motor goes in the aquarium the only thing that is outside the aquarium is
the remaining other end of the power cord that plugs to the wall , will
this filter be an electrical hazard please explain i am new to this its for
my 4 year old daughter
I really like your setup. Im currently doing something similar and came
across your video. I can't quite figure out where your water goes after it
goes through the bio balls though. You said it goes under the next baffle,
but it looks dry under there?
Firstly I do apologize for the camera work and my babbling and when I say Japanese mattern, I actually mean Japanese filter matting... Doh! This is my 8ft tank ...
+peteandjanis Hi and thanks for your interest and kind words.I didn't build the tank myself but I did get it without bracing, so I got it built but only with four panels of glass. To brace it I added 2" wide, 10mm glass across the entire two long lengths and sides top and bottom. I then added quite large cross bracing at the top to hold the cover glass.I added the full overflow panel. I also drilled the tank for the piping that you see.If you have any other questions I am happy to answer. Cheers.
+Srijith DS Hi and many thanks for viewing and your comment. The tank glass thickness used is 10mm, it has full reinforcing bracing across the entire two bottom long lengths and all top edges are reinforced. The 10mm glass separating the filtering system in the tank helps too.Cheers.
+Bebo PR Hi, thanks for viewing and your interest.I usually change 200 liters of water every 2-3 weeks.I could quite easily leave it for 8-10 weeks without a water change (that is with this filtration, the amount of fish and what I feed them). I think these Lake Tanganyika fish tolerate smaller water changes more often than large ones every now and then.
Hi Peter, looking at buying a 8x2x2 tank with a sump in Melbourne. Just
wanting to know where you purchased your tank and cabinet from and how much
was it if you don't mind me asking? Did you buy the sump as we'll or did
you make it?
Cheers Tim
Hi Tim Hofmaier. Thanks for your interest and questions.IF your after a standard 8ft and not a custom made one I would suggest you ring around on price because a shop may have one in stock and would prefer to sell that than getting one made, it would also be ready to be used rather than waiting for one to be made and then waiting for all silicone to cure (around another 4-6 weeks waiting).I actually bought my 8 ft tank (standard tank only) through Cranbourne aquarium ($950) but have bought other tanks (because of price) from many other shops or through ebay, trading post and gumtree.I made the sump and overflow area at one end to suit where it was going in the house, I also drilled the holes and plumbed it myself for ease of maintenance and water changes. Any other questions you may have please message me. Cheers.
Hi MattJames Productions.Yep, I only use one heater that's placed in the last compartment of the sump. Our house kinda maintains a decent temperature all year round so the one 300Watt Jaguar (Eheim) heater has done fine.I do keep a good eye on the temperature every morning, evening and night, pretty much every time I look at the tank as I do with everything else. Cheers
Sump for a Freshwater Aquarium?
What are the upsides to running a sump on your aquarium?
+Kenneth shaheen jr. Nah, my plants "clean" the gravel for me, kind the point of creating an eco system. Really takes the crap labor out of owning a tank like this. I still have lots to do, but, it's all stuff that I like to do. i.e. trimming plants.
have any of you been able to have filters so effective that you can
recycle/reuse the water back to tank. In Aquaponics this seems to be how
its done and wonder if those with tanks have tried to do similar concepts
(have seen small scale, but not larger or to reuse water). The reason is
the massive water usage and unless the 'water change' water is used on
gardens or something, its a lot of wasted water (cost and well as
environmental issues to consider). Maybe even using tank water as 'grey
water' for toilets or something else?
Sumps or any external filters do seem to be the best option for any tank
big or small as well as ponds or other setups. As he pointed out, the fact
you are not limited to how much filter medium is used and not taking up
tank space (as well as detracts from the beauty).
atm I am gathering info for future aims as there is no point wasting effort
since I will be moving. Very grateful that people share info and its
inspired some ideas I want to try and if successful I will return the favor
and share the info (if it fails, perhaps share also so others know what
fails lol)
Thanks for sharing! :)
+Missy West I almost always use my excess tank water from water changes for some other use. Like to the aquaponics or the garden. At times I do not need it, so it goes down the drain, that said it is not a waste of water. (I did not contaminate with radiation or split any of the atoms) :)
+dogglet1234 guess it depends on the pumps etc, but a valid concern. Could perhaps add more sound deadening inside the cupboard/or the doors etc? Know I am being annoyed by an air pump atm, 'quiet operation' my ass!!! lol. No big deal, only temp set up and will aim for 'ideal' after I move but it is something for people to consider especially if tank is in a living room/bedroom.
My diy 40g sump
this Was (FW) testing my 40g DIY sump.... It for my 125g.
This is my original DIY wet/dry system I did a few years ago, used it for my fw tank. I had 5 gal. Bioballs inside, which half always remained submerged.
Yeah I rarely have someone do things for me unless it's something unrelated
to what I know, then maybe. I was going to go ahead and use glass for the
baffles but then found out HD doesn't deal with glass sheets anymore. So I
went with my original idea with 1/4" Optix Acrylic. Glass would have been
much cheaper but oh well.
yeah i used glass on my sump and i cut it myself it wasnt bad i just broke
one piece and when you reply to comments do you take the curser over the
comment and click reply and then type or do you just leave a comment?
I use my phone most of the time to reply. It simply says-to reply
back-click here, so that's what I do lol. Yeah I'm using a circular saw and
cutting the sheet down is all, pretty simple, just move slow n easy is all.
oh haha well normally i get a message in my inbox when people reply but not
when you reply lol but your sump is coming along pretty nice and im
currently making a stand for my sump and 20 gallon long
New 130l tank & sump, DIY sump design from uarujoey with a second overflow for a backup, 2 x Jebo 100W heaters, Via Aqua 480 200gph pump, 3 level tray for ...
This was my first setup in my room, I have now moved it to the storage room
with a 246L+100L(large tank in video)+130L+160Lbarrel around 550L-600L this
setup has been the master piece of my collection, I am going to sell it
soon so I'll be uploading a video to show everyone what a great setup this
is and very affordable on a short budget.
sorry for late replay, all are pretty good and the reef ones are just
really well designed but if you have anything squishy like snails or slugs
they will get sucked through it and dirty your whole tank, I use one that
was a internal filter that had a wave maker attachment(pipe with many holes
in it from the filters powerhead)
hey nice tank, and pretty cool setup. Hey quick question, im trying to
build my freswhater 75 gallon tank with a sump, but I am confused as to
which powerheads to use. Can the ones used to reefs also be used in
freshwater aquariums? which ones do you recommend?
Thanks, i've adjusted my sump tank level so the wet/dry filter is more
effective now, and my next video will have the latest tank members Emme and
Ra my new Cory Cat fish, PS nice lizard! pitty cant get them in nz
u probs should have the sponges in the overflow surface skimmer pipes
because it will clog and catch all of the waste . u want the waste to go in
to ur sump. but nice set up
Well thanks for your question ! And the way that this is determed is the
flow and or restriction, What I mean by that is you need to have the same
amount of water pumping out of sump (via-pump) to the display tank as is
going back down to the sump and there is many ways to regulate this filter
matrial is the easest way, also your Pump needs to match your Pipe or Hose
size(small will restric flow) - (big will reduce, slow down flow)
Best stuff to use that is cheap and affective is the 100% Silicone GE
makes. Comes in a red regular size calk tube. 4x cheaper then aquarium
silicone and safe for use in fishtanks/reeftanks. Home Depot carries it. I
wouldn't trust the white stuff. What I've heard, is that it contains
anti-mold chemicals than CAN effect life in your tank. But if it works for
you I suppose that's fine.
@awinski999 well thanks for coment, and yes I let silicon dry for like a
week or more, and the reason i used 55-galon tank is simply to have more
water for the system, More water equals less maintence, or should I say if
you have a issue with tank you have more time to fix problem , although I
have Not had any problem yet with this tank set up. Thanks
When I built my sump I used glass panels (1/4 inch) and they ended up
cheaper than plexi glass. The glass shop cuts them to size and sands the
edges. I don't believe that white silicon is aquarium safe as it will leach
fungicides into the water. I emailed a few silicon companys and they said
if it doesn't say for aquariums not to use it.
Very nice project, you got the tank for free but you had a lot of work to
get it working :) If i were you i´d change those bags of active charcoal
and phosphate remover to near the return pump because whre they are they
will became dirty and reduce its effect faster, thanks for sharing, keep up
the good work.
Well man like I said before, Anyone can use what even they feel good with ,
But as for me and mine I have used all types of 100% Silicon and this white
has been installed for 1-year as you can see in my video posting and I have
not had any problem ! So you be the judge?? Thanks
well since there seems to be so much concern here lately on me using white
silicone, Does anyone one know what the diferenance is besides the color &
price?? Becuse like I said it has been installed for 1-year and I havent
found any problems?? Thanks
Mate im a Glazier by trade and have made thousands of tanks and the
silicone you used if you havent had a problem yet after a year its safe the
only thing i have to say is you used a hell of a lot a bit of overkill but
whatever works. Good job
Spit on your finger and the scilicone won't stick to your finger. If you
have a lot to seal, spit in the tank. It won't stick to spit. Works
wonders. You will get a profesional looking seal this way, with no
airpockets.
Good Job but why didnt you use clear silicone? i know its only a sump but
that white silicone stands out alot., and R u sure that white silicone is
safe. They say to use 100% silicone no anty mildew no nothing.
Well I have used this before and works fine for me anyone can use what they
want to, this tank has been installed for 1-year now, & it is doing fine ,
So you decide. Thanks
waste of silicone... like a bead weld you get to a point where it's just a
waste and provides no more added strength to the seal... Other than that,
great job!
@thepeanutking regular silicone has worked well for me too but if you wnat
to stay on the safe side pet stores sell all glass aquarium tank silicone.
FYI
