Peter Revson - An American Racing Hero
Born: 27th February 1939, New York City (USA) Died: 22nd March 1974, Kyalami (ZA) Grand Prix driven: 30 First Grand Prix: Belgium in Spa 1964 in a Lotus ...
Has a young man in 1973 I had briefly met Peter Revson at a Father and Son
sports carnival in (New York City). At that time I was not much of a race
fan, and I really did not know much about Mr. Revson till later on, and I
became a big race fan. Mr. Revson at the time of our meeting took the time
to sign an autographed picture of himself for me. To this day I still have
and cherish it. I remember Mr. Revson has being really kind, well dressed,
and just a real gentleman. A true American Champion RIP Peter!!!
Became a fan of F1 from 1981 so wasn't familiar with the 70's era apart
from the big names. Saw a documentary this week on Peter and I've got to
say I feel a sadness for the loss of someone special. I don't know how fast
he was or how many more races he would have won had he not left too soon.
But listening to him being interviewed reminds me that we have far too few
drivers today with something genuinely interesting and thoughtful to say.
Class tribute for a class act.
Dan Gurney in 11 seasons in F1 won-4 and had 19 podium finishes. Peter
Revson in 5 seasons in F1 won-2 and had 8 podium finishes. Dan Gurney in 5
seasons in Can Am Won-3, had 1-3rd, 1-6th and 1-9th. All other races he
broke down or blew his engine. Finished 7th in 1970. Peter Revson in 5
seasons in Can Am Won-5, had 5-2nd, 4-3rd, 4-4th, 2-5th, 2-6th, & 2-7th Won
Championship in 1971, Finished 6th in 1972, Finished 8th in 1970, & 9th in
1967. (Much better record)
Denny Hulme was pretty much untouchable in Can-am and still holds the
record for the most wins and poles. But he also drove the best car,the
McLaren-Chevrolet. Denny Hulme wasn't that good in F1. Pete Revson won both
his raced driving the McLaren M23,which most experts believe was the most
competitive car at the later part of the 1973 season. The M23 won both
titles in 1974.Still holds the record for the most wins for a single model
with 16.
I know, in the Brabham-Repco. But Jack Brabham was 42 as his team mate, and
Jim Clark had 4 wins that season to Brabham's and Hulme's 2 each. The bad
reliability of the new Cosworth DFV, meant he lost an easy title. By the
early 70's Hulme still won the odd race, but he only had 1 pole his entire
career. Hulme was good. But I wouldn't compare him to
Clark,Stewart,Hill,Fittipaldi or even Ickx.
Well he was brilliant in Can-Am. And back in the late 60's, early 70's
those Can-Am beasts were way faster than those in Formula 1 Anybody that
could race those, let alone win in those deserves all praise. I know he got
seriously burnt trying to qualify for the Indy500 some year. But overcame
his injuries to race for years. Sadly he left us in 1992, while driving in
Bathurst, in Australia.
Peter was not only a great driver, but a one of Racing's nicest people. If
any family member is checking, let them know I saw him to be a man who had
so many friends and was loved and respected by everyone in the Racing
Community, as well as those who loved the sport as he loved it. I'll never
forget the name....... Peter Revson. (1939-1974) Thanks so much for
posting, and God Speed.
Dan Gurney was the only man Jim Clark feared would have a good car he
admitted to his dad. On Clark's funeral the late Jim's dad approached
Gurney and told him this. Indeed Gurney made relatively easy work of two
time world champion Jack Brabham in their time together at Brabham. Revson
also deserved a better fate because he had it in him to be world champion.
Dan Gurney never raced a top car in F1. He won Porsche's only win in 1962.
Beat Jack Brabham when they were team mates in 1964. Won in the
Eagle-Weslake at Spa in 1967. Pete Revson's both wins came in the McLaren
M23,which most expert believe was the best car in the second half of the
1973 season. The M23 won 16 races. This record still stands.
Dan Gurney was the most talented F1 driver from the USA. Jim Clark only
feared him and had the most respect for him out of all his competitors. Jim
Clark knew he would be in trouble if Dan Gurney ever got to drive a good
and reliable car. Pete Revson was good too and sadly died too early.
@lfulhorst you're right the white porshe 908 #48 was far less powerful and
made the race all the more exciting as they almost won it! steve mcqueen
kept that car and was part of his estate sale after he passed. revson and
mcqueen were a fantastic pilot combo.
Peter Revsen was probably the most talented and the best F1 Driver to ever
come from the United States. Peter died way too soon so we will never know
what he could have accomplished in Formula 1 with those powerful Ford
engines in UOP Shadow.
Yes that's Hulme and Graham, there is a really good shot of a morose
looking Denny in the pits the next day.....he was pretty close to Peter.
And Denny was more of a feely guy than most racers. He was a bit emotional
when no one was looking.
Watched him race the Porche 917 with Steve McQueen at Sebring. Andretti
came from behind with a stunning drive in the Ferrari 512 to just barely
win. Otherwise Revson/McQueen would have won overall but still won in
class. Beautiful tribute.
Some time ago I emailed one of the managing partners for McLaren during the
period of time Peter Revson drove for them. He told me that Peter actually
survived the crash, but died from smoke and fume inhalation very shortly
after.
@Revstarr1 I had a long conversation with Pete about a week before he left
for SA. I was absolutely floored when I heard the news. This is a very nice
tribute to a man whom I was proud to have called friend. Jeff Dahn
I met Peter Revson in San Francisco at a car show. He was an amazing
gentleman and a talented driver. I remember too well when he died ... thank
you for this tribute; it's good to know that he won't be forgotten.
