Splitting a rock
A rather manly hobby.. Poetry is nice, sure.. but a split rock stays split.
brilaw84, I don't know any source for wedges. These were forged by my
grandfather who was a blacksmith, but any shop should be able to mill a few
from steel stock. A wedge should come with two corresponding inserts that
are also wedge shaped and make pressure equal along the bore of the hole,
or you'll just crack of a piece of the top.
@apauln A good point. Not only could sharp pieces of rock go flying, but
tools like the wedges have been known to (in freakish accidents) send
lethal shrapnel unless the hitting surface is trimmed regularly with a
grinder. I really should have worn proper eye protection.
@FirstClassSkeptic try picking an underside of the boulder, focus on a
small area, where there may be a hair crack, kee feeding the fire for a
couple of hours. Cold water, fast cool, and repeat, whenever you get a
chance. Freezing weather is much better tho.
Nope. This is an old 50's Pioneer. It has no chuck and no weight you can
put on it can keep it from jumping. It's not at all like a modern pneumatic
jackhammer. Leaning on it will gain you nothing more than white knuckles
and nerve damage.
@FirstClassSkeptic Sorry, can't help you there. This one is gas powered and
I haven't used any other kind. The drill bit is 1 3/8" (35mm) in diameter I
think. One of them are anyway, and I have a few smaller and longer ones as
well.
be cheaper if you knew how to drill and put some weight on the
hammer...anyone can see that half the power is lost with the hammer jumping
and not just the bit .... besides the fact of chewing up your chuck
