Hi Travis! Speaking about short stories- I wrote my first one but, I need
to wait until March 14th, 2015 to do my first edit. I read you short story
book, "A Midnight Stroll" and that had seven short stories. It was a bit
scary for me. For you. The short story book was 225 pages! That is just
absurd! Just seven short stories take up that much? Jesus! Come on, Travis!
Anyways- I need your help! I have an idea for a short story, it is based
off your short story, "Squirrel". It will be about a man that lives in the Rancacoo
Wewds I am trying not to enclose the location. He has a girlfriend and he
having a job as an editor for a publishing company / publisher. One scene I
have in my head is this- him going to the Revolutionary War Reenactment. He
gets paid for it. Reenactments for wars is also his job. Then, he goes
shooting etc. Can you help me build off of that idea. Make a video on How
to build off an idea or story for writing Wednesday or for the writing tips
video. Please Trav.
I love they idea of a Q&A series about writing, especially since (no
offense) you don't have a super large fan base yet, which means you can
actually take the time to look through each person's question(s). You made
a video a long time ago describing the publishing business, differences
between small press, self publishing etc. but the quality of the video
wasn't great. Would you consider remaking/reinventing that video, or
perhaps a similar one?
10-15 pages?!?!? My "short stories" are in their entirety that long. I jump
right in to the scene. I've gotten lots of compliments for my stories
because I fully describe the scene and have good ideas. Hell my poems are
longer than my short stories sometimes. Then again, I'm just starting out.
I'm stuck here.... Well, in my book a character is telling a story and I
don't know how to start it off. I don't want it too be anything too cheesy,
like once apon a time, and my actual story is set in the future, but the
human technology is reversed. Yeah...
Hey Travis, I am a writer, and I struggle with ADD myself. I will pick up a
project and be unable to finish it after a couple days. Do you have any
advice for this? I would rather have one finished project then several
unfinished projects.
I am writing a short story about an angel and a demon and i dnt know how to
add onto it, the angel is trying to convert the demon to good (i know its
cheesy but its my first story) who should i go about it?
Could you possibly make a video on how to make short stories and novellas
and stuff like that free? I can't figure out how to make it free and the
lowest price I can have it go down to is 0.99¢
Thank you for making this video!! I feel so loved haha:P very helpful!!
Side note: what is your opinion on wattpad? And on other online sites where
people just post their stories for all to see?
You have to enroll it in the KDP select program. You can only have it free
for five days, however. I'd recommend going over to smash words; you can
leave it free permanently there.
Writing Fiction & Poetry : How to Write a Short Story
Writing a short story involves reading lots of other short stories, developing a character with a conflict and being concise with no room for wasted words.
@ZenBarracuda: The most important thing you have to remember is that
whatever your goal in life is, whatever you hope to achieve, whether
professional, marriage, kids, writing..whatever, there is a "yetzer hara"
inside of you, or a "evil inclination" as exists in every man, that will
try to spoil your dreams & make you fail so that you won't succeed. Your
job in life is to fight the yetzer hara and work hard at achieving what
will make you a fulfilled person. That is all you have to remember!
@ZenBarracuda: Read books that were written about people in your
character's situation. For instance, if your writing about a soldier, read
"All Quiet on the Western Front" etc. Read everything you can get your
hands on and then project your individual's character onto this situation
and create dialogue or situations that make up your story. Imagine what it
would be like sitting in a trench shooting at the enemy and then start
writing: the smells, the sounds, the sights, the conversations...
I assume you are single by the way you talk because the kind of "authentic
communication" you long for only really comes out in a marriage. I would
hope you would stay polite in your job because you want your patients to
trust you. Writing is a great way for self-expression. You can let your
inner voice speak on paper in ways that you can't with real people in the
real world. 'Please' and "thank you" are important in any language and
culture. Don't discount the importance of good manners!
@SkylarkGSX I think what he is getting at is that you need to find the
inspiration and what your looking for in your own story. Its like, finding
credible sources, when I write, I read, it gives me the feelings and also
allows me to seek out what to write and what should it be about. It does
not make you a fraud unless your stealing an idea completely. Which, if you
were publishing, wouldn't work. You should look for deeper meaning inside
the advice, people see everything differently.
Trust me, you would not want to live in an "impolite society" where people
never politely inquired how you are feeling. We must train ourselves to
always look on the bright side but have enough strength of character to
work through our own problems. If you are feeling down about something, you
can talk to a parent, a priest or a trusted counselor. The huge amount of
stress can be dropped if we learn to accept our situation as being the best
possible for our own growth.
Maybe the behaviors you are describing exist in your marriage but
definitely not in mine. Authentic communication can flourish in a
relationship where neither has to pretend to be someone else and you don't
bring third parties into the relationship and you can express your thoughts
freely, but respectfully, never in a demeaning fashion. It's not always
easy but the payback is MORE than worth the investment.
Hello! Thanks a lot for this useful video. By the way, I hear a lot of
people keep on talking about online coaching known as Novelonax Academy (do
a google search), but I'm not sure if it is really good. Have you tried
using Novelonax Academy? I've heard some awesome things about it and my
buddy finally learn to write, publish, and market his novel easily, but she
refuses to tell me: (
The word "ra" means evil. The goal of the yetzer hara is to pull man
towards evil pure and simple. Anytime you give in to this impulse you stab
yourself in the back and get further away from your goals. Case in point:
Tiger Woods. He gave into all his evil impulses and destroyed his life;
hence, the yetzer hara succeeded in destroying him!
i've always loved writing but i've never gotten very far. lately i've been
taking it very seriously. i'm trying to write a novella. so far i have 7000
words... and i'd think i'm almost half way through the story. [like this
video said... i know the problem... i just don't know where the story is
going yet]
Quite enjoyed this, Short Stories are my least favorite form of writing,
and now you have explained why, partly because of the task, and partly
because I never read them and find no pleasure reading them! I would much
rather read poetry or a novel :)
Good vid. Fitting with the theme of short story you made a short video? lol
You gave great points anyway. Though, it would be cool (if you have the
time) if you could make longer videos? Well either way thanks for the
upload.
I liked your video but it was brief. I'd like for you to discuss how the
old pulp writers managed to hammer out a short story over the weekend while
getting paid for it? Thanks.
guys! didn't u notice that he is talking about caracters as if they r
already t here? like when sayin' : you have to know your caracter and
his/her problem ans stuff"????!!!!
I love how he just cuts you off at the knees early, "You are probably never
going to write anything as good as Chekov..." translation "Chekov is legend
so give it up!"
If you really want to know how to write short fiction, read Flannery
O'Connor's Mystery and Mannners. Charles Baxter's Burning Down the House is
also helpful.
That's the whole point! Wow, it was suppose to be short and without any
wasted words.

my story :D Its called, The Basement.
"HONEY! Dinner is ready!" My mother called. "MOM WOULD YA STOP SCREAMING
AND CALLING ME HONEY?!" I screamed back at her. By the way, my name is
Sophie. I came and sat down at the table looking at the overcooked burnt
hamburger. I took a bite, then gagged right infront of my mom. "Sophie
Brooks! Why would you ever, (sob) gag at my food!?" My mom shot at me with
a sad tone. "GO EAT IN YOUR BEDROOM!" She boomed. I was ok with eating in
my bedroom. So I walked in and sat on my bed. I hadn't gotten a drink so I
went to the basement to get some pop. "Coke? Nah. Sprite? Eww. Mr. Pibb?
Gross! Where'd all my Pepsi go!?" I said looking through all of the pop.
Just then I heard a noise. It was coing from something covered with a
blanket. I walked abesentmindedly to it. I took off the blanket. I gasped
looking into the dreadful sight I had found. It was a portal. Covered with
blood and dust... On top of it was a real head.. It was a Great Dane. My
father.. "Dad..?! No.. I thought.. no NO!" I was confused. I had been told
he died in a car crash. It wasn't true. I felt something. Pulling me into
the portal. "AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!" I screamed. Before I knew it I
had gone through. I breathed heavily. I was sitting on a solid type of
rock. I opened my eyes and all I saw were mangled, bloodied LPS Great
Danes. But the catch was, they were still walking and breathing. I got up
and walked. I head 1 great Dane walking by me say "WATCH WERE YA GOIN'!" He
didn't sound pleased seeing a Short Haired cat. I trembled and fell
backwards. I was shot with an arrow in my back. I was being pulled to some
palace.. some red dreadful palace. I was put down. "STOP YOU RUFFIANS!" I
screamed trying to sound threatening. I wasn't. They laughed and laughed.
"SILENCE!" The one in the throne boomed. They were all quiet and they moved
to the side so I could see him. For I saw a Great Dane missing his head.
"Sophie Brooks.." He said loudly. I could tell he was trying to sound
quiet. "Do you know who I am..?" He said partially quiet. I replied. "My...
my.. m-m-my Dad..?" Shuttering I finally got it out. "YES. That is me." He
boomed. "JOIN ME SOPHIE! WE CAN LEAD THE UNDERWORLD TOGETHER!" I didn't
bear to say yes. "NO DAD!" I screamed as loud as my lungs could scream.
"Ah.. FINE MY DAUGHTER.. THEN. WE. MUST. FIGHT..." He boomed so loud it
hurt my little eardrums. "Fine.. fine be that way I will fight you.." I
said actually threatening. My claws unsheated. I pounces my claws sinking
into his back. He called something. Snakes. I screamed as they bit me and
poison started flowing in my veins. It was just the when something
happened. Something big. My paws started to glow green. My once blond fur
changed diamond blue. A plasma ball. I had made a plasma ball. Without
hesitation, I shot it at my dad, the castle exploded. And I had died, also.
"huh.. Hello..?" I opened my eyes to a beautiful blue sky. "Hello there
Sophie. We are the angels." A beautiful white husky said. "My name is
Shooting-Star" She said. "Hello Shooting-Star.. Can you tell me where I
am..?" I said softly. "Sophie.Last night you died. Your in heaven." She
said. "But there is no worry here. You will be ok." I sighed. "Ok
Shooting-Star." I said with a yawn. The night fell and I grew tired. I fell
asleep on the cloud. The soft night breeze on my fur felt nice. As I
remembered all of the good times...
☆The end☆
Thank you! That means a lot to me. I spend a lot of time writing stories and I was really happy that there was a story writing contest. But still it means so much to me! Thank you!!
