Although...I must say that I would prefer it if the conductor started (and
conducted) the piece more 'in the mood'. I find his movements a little too
energetic for the music - especially when he gave the first upbeat. But if
it's a university orchestra he's conducting, I can understand.

Hardly pristine, more stoic than anything else. The orchestra has
absolutely no understanding of the piece, and lacks any enthusiasm for the
piece. That said, soloist is much better than the orchestra. One can
forgive the lack of artistry if the virtuosity is there, but this
performance lacks both technical and artistic elements.
when I first heard this, it evoked enough emotion to warrant a SLEW of
paintings. Hearing it now, I'm cold as a cucumber. He does great, hitting
mostly the right notes, but I'm NOT feeling it.
