oh~ hhaha, it's just soap water (Tide and some water) to determine if the pipe leaks. i got p0420 before too. first thing i checked was to make sure exhaust pipe wasn't leaking. so here's the video of the "first test"..

na, i got the donut gaskets from Toyota dealer. the video shows that the pipe is leaking with the old donut gaskets. I went ahead and replaced it. I haven't had P0420 come up since....

@toyota4life94 not sure what to tell you for your highlander... mine was triggered because the Donut Gaskets were "leaking".. you might want to test for any leaks. worth a try :)

yea.. so the story is, i got P0420. found the leak in my system. i got new donut gaskets in, tightened the "3 amigos" to the spec. then deleted the code. code never came back.

it wasn't so much for miles (in my case). i had 'rain damage' to it which didn't help... but for what it's worth, it had about 96k? give and take?

I was looking for the best way to check for exhaust leaks I like your way I am guessing the exhaust of a vacuum on the tall pipe blowing air in.

@Joshuabrutl it's showing that he has an exhaust leak which could possibly trigger a lean code (I guess)

god damn ... your car is misfiring and breaking your cats. casual intermittent misfires ... did you change the sparks ? converters dont just die, they die for a reason, misfiring rough idle ...

+Twin Cities Dashcam East coast all the way. Just lucked out so far. Then again, this is the 5th or 6th exhaust setup so the pipes will at least look a little ok.
