Yes, but he is expressing the outlook of a profit-minded VC, looking for
the one in a million, billion dollar breakthroughs. No place in his outlook
for a wonderfully useful lifestyle business for everyday entrepreneurs. So
he projects his own bias out onto the entire culture. Facebook is an
advertising company. That's boring to any talented creative person unless
they make graphic arts for ads. Advertising is a careerist job, mostly. And
that's what all the hype is about now. I could care less, as a guy who
makes physical objects. No, I do not have to consider myself lowly if I
don't want to be the next Facebook. At least I'm not so neurotic and
megalomaniacal that I want to live forever, and will be freaked out if
those fountain of youth pills fail to arrive. Ugh, what a sad fella, given
that Zuckerberg is worth 100X what Thiel is. For Mark, Facebook *is* a
lifestyle company. He likes what he does. He's not in it for the money. He
likes to solve programing problems and have fun bringing people together.
He's not even trying to alter society, as he allows society to do that
itself, on its own, using his site.

We live in a capitalistic society & the goal of capitalism is to earn as
much money as possible. There are many different ways of doing so both
legal & illegal. The legal ways are to innovate, to create services & to
create products. The goal is to create stuff which people may want or
something that people didn't know that they wanted. In a capitalistic
system there will always be poor people, the reason there seems to be more
poor people is because of the increase in population. Capitalism works by
people finding new niches to exploit & turning a blind eye from any
'problems' whether that be pollution, poverty, low living standards, mass
extinctions, inequalities & change in climate. Problems only get 'solved'
in a capitalistic system when it's seemed to be a immediate threat or when
there is a large ruckus from the masses. Capitalism was okay before but in
the information age there needs to be a shift in thinking on how
economies/governments are organized & structured. The reason why no one is
interested in thinking about changing things (many people are talking about
it but no one who has any actual power) is because they don't believe
capitalism needs fixing nor do they believe capitalism needs to be changed
into a different system/s. In short capitalism is short sighted with only
looking to make money for the people who are living the life of luxury at
the top of the pyramid whilst the masses are having to deal with the
aforementioned issues.
Sorry for the long post but I really believe in the subject of needing
change that will allow us in present to allow the people in the future to
live sustainably with less effects on the environment & on population.
