Here's a view of the mango collection at The Fruit and Spice Park, Redlands Florida. There's a Mango Mania on June 28th 2014. I'm thinking I'll have to go to ...
At the fruit and spice park, you are allowed to eat any of the fallen
fruit, I visited last year, at the end of the season, and there were still
plenty of fruit to sample. bring a pocket knife and some wet wipes, you
will need it.
Irwin mentioned is a large red mango, mild flavor like Osteen, Irwin is
the variety grown in Japan and sold for hundreds of dollars per fruit. in
the gift fruit markets.
+agriperma Have fun at the Expo! I saw Gary last month at his nursery and he was telling me about work on the Mamey Sapote at his place in Costa Rica. There may be a dwarf variety in the future, which would be great for container growing. If you enjoy fruit videos I made a series of three videos of part of my friends collection. He's been running the Rare Fruit Council here for over 30 years. The video is called Tropical Fruit in Indian River county. I know what you mean about getting bit by the collecting bug! Good chatting with you.
+dullard69 I met Gary Zill and his wife last year at the Mango Festival held on this Island ( D. R.) He has done great service developing new improved varieties in his breeding program. he sure has some colorful names for his creations.Noris Ledesma was also at last years Expo, and will also be speaking at this years expo. which starts in a few days, I am going to get permission to take a couple days off to film her and the other speakers. last year she invited me to film behind the scenes for the Fairchild event, but I could not make it.I look forward to seeing more videos from you, specially the Mango Mania. my mother lives in Hollywoofd Fla . I have a couple of mango tree planted there, a huge Valencia Pride tree, and a Pickering. I think I will add another variety when I go back in Sept. Once you start collecting varieties, you get bit by the bug, and just want to keep adding more, if I had the space I would have a lot more.
+agriperma I have Carrie, Choc Anon, Springfels, Lancetilla, Sweet Tart and Malika in the ground and a 7 gallon Keitt. Zill's has added some new varieties this past year so, I may have to expand my collection. I would love to go to Fairchild's mango fest. I've been to the chocolate fest and it was pretty cool. We usually eat Malika when it is over ripe. I was loving Malika and Okrong last year. I'll make a video of Mango Mania if I go.
+dullard69 Although I am a native Floridian, I am currently working overseas, I visit Fla 2-3 times a year, So have not made the Mango Mania, or the Fairchild events yet.Coincidentally I was able to try the Malika at F&SP, picking is not allowed from the trees, but ground picking is ok. you should also make it down there when the White Sapote are ripe, The Malika is really good, they say that the Malika should not be allowed to ripen on the tree, but the ones I had were fallen fruit, and they were still good.I did drive to Merritt Island on my way to Orlando Convention, to buy fruit from local growers, lots of Florida's Mango history originates from Merritt Island. As for the Irwin, its a very attractive looking mango, but really never took off as a commercial variety in the US, same goes for the Osteen. yet they were adopted in other countries. Osteen in Spain, and Irwin in Japan.I have about a dozen varieties mostly all in containers, some have fruited. Alphonso, Osteen, Kent, Coconut cream, Ice Cream, Nam Doc Mai, Timour, Lancetilla, Angie, Maha Chanok, Kesar, Manila.A few more I would like to get, Glenn, Carrie, a replacement Lemon Zest, ( mine died ). S.T. Maui, Rapoza.Which ones you have in your collection?
I'm glad to hear they will let you eat the fallen fruit. They have a couple of posted signs around the park warning about such things. Thanks for the Irwin report. I have six cultivars in my yard and a friend down the road a few miles has over twenty but no Irwin. Malika is my current Indian race favorite. Have you been to Mango Mania with Chris Collins before? I might make the trip from Vero Beach to check it out.
