A documentary film about a mountain ethnic group in South East Asia, the Prisoners of a White God, tells the story about a researcher, who investigates the ...
Ok, here is a partial list of what is wrong, sometimes blatantly wrong with
this film.
1. The biggest problem for hilltribes in SE Asia are their governments not
missionaries. The majority of missionaries in Thailand don’t even convert
anyone, but just help with medical, food, clothing etc. Thailand has maybe
1% Christian population.
2. The biggest problem with this video is it’s just this guy’s word, he
actually doesn’t show proof of anything, it’s just his opinion, and some
rumors of people saying things, kind of strange.
3. Cultural genocide has been practiced by the all the gov’ts of SE Asia
for a long, long, long time. It is not the result of missionaries. Author’s
lack of understanding the history of this area or intentionally ignoring it.
4. All Thai public schools and indeed most public schools in Asia are run
like military facilities, again, nothing to do with missionaries, it’s an
Asian thing. Perhaps the author’s romantic notion of hilltribe life seems
idyllic, but not really accurate.
5. Yes, hillltribes are restricted by their local gov’ts and many do not
have documentation or citizenship, but they do have more choices than just
a local missionary and they are generally not forced to abandon their own
religion or culture. Many simply leave to go to the cities to find work as
maids, manual labor, construction, etc. Some do end up in the sex trade,
but it is not because of missionaries, it’s because of the local gov’t and
corrupt local officials taking advantage of them.
6. Some of what some of the missionaries describe are actually accurate
about many aspects of SE Asia. There is a ton of fear of spirits in
everything and a constant appeasement of the spirits in everyday life from
hilltribes to downtown Bangkok. If this author doesn’t understand that,
then he is truly clueless.
7. Uhm, slash and burn is not sustainable and opium isn’t used for
‘ailments’. The opium wars with the British brought opium into this part of
the world and hilltribes and many Asians have been suffering ever since.
There are so many very sad, destroyed lives in this area of the world
because of opium and heroin. There is a lot of organized crime related to
it as well. Again the author is naïve and doesn’t understand the area. I
find his treatment of his really, really insulting.
8. There have been many, many programs to help hilltribes over the years
get beyond opium cultivation, many of them very successful. Again, the
author is flat out wrong about no alternatives given to them. The problem
is, opium is highly, highly addictive and there are a lot of drug lords in
the whole region who would rather have hilltribes growing opium.
9. The 2003 Thai gov’t war on drugs was against meth and meth-like
stimulants primarily. Again, either this author does not know or is
intentionally lying to sell his viewpoint.
10. The hilltribe tourist zoo thing is very real, and makes me sick to my
stomach. But what does that have to do with a ‘white God’ or missionaries?
It is the local gov’t that is doing that and local people in power who
control these people, not missionaries. He points this out and it’s true,
it’s the gov’ts that are not helping these people, nothing to do with a
white god or missionaries.
11. What do the two scenes with the crazy people shouting bible stuff in
English at people in the city? (presumably Chiang Mai) have to do with
anything? No one listens to them anyway, no one understands what they are
saying and they have absolutely nothing to do with the Hilltribes. Oh, it
makes for more drama, ok.
12. How many catholic priests have molested young boys? Probably about the
same rate in Thailand as in other countries. Lufthansa used to actually
allow a printed ad for sex trips with underaged Thai children on their
planes. Both Europeans and Americans are unfortunately known for this in
Thailand. Horrible, disgusting, sick, but again, nothing to really do with
religion or missionaries.
13. Ok, from about 40:00 on it just kind of like the Blaire Witch Project
and just as made up. If someone were trying to kill this guy in Thailand,
he would be dead. I call BS.
+finlaco yes, that would be a problem and should certainly be addressed. Unfortunately, this video clouds the issues by mixing them and blaming missionaries for many of the government created problems. If the governments of these countries took care of and protected these people, far fewer missionaries would even be in these areas.
The majority of missionaries in Thailand don’t even convert anyone, but just help with medical, food, clothing etc. - All of which is provided by non religious NGO's - I travel regularly up North and in remote areas American Churches are everywhere especially the Mormons - The Missionaries create massive problems because all White NGO are assumed to be here to take away the children and give them an 'education' - It makes it more difficult for non religious NGO's to gain the trust of locals - Sex education becomes zero, HIV/AIDS education becomes dont do it etc...If Religious organisations enslaved (Magdelan Laundries), sexually & physically abused children in fist world countries, what do you think they do in developing countries?
to miss the opportunity to record one alleged abduction attempt is
unfortunate
to miss the opportunity to record a second alleged abduction attempt is
careless
i'd suggest remove the melodrama from the end and the documentary would
benefit greatly
Where'd my post go? Could you please put it back?
To summarize it, this film unfairly depicts all missionaries as evil. Yes,
there is corruption among missionaries, and we cannot and should not
tolerate it. However, many of the problems the Akha are facing come from
globalization and cultural assimilation programs under the governments of
Laos, Thailand, and Myanmar/Burma. Mandatory use of Thai language in
schools, relocation of children for education, and existing discrimination
against the hill people are current social and governmental policies the
missionaries must deal with. Most missionaries are just working in the
framework prescribed or allowed by the government. Yes, some do abuse
children and try to get rich at the expense of the Akha. However, to
characterize ALL missionaries in this way, as barbarous cultural
imperialists forcing their "white god" on the Akha, is intellectually
dishonest and sensationalist. Never mind the Thai, Lisu, Karen, Korean and
all the other non-white Christians working among the Akha people, in
addition to Christian Akha working among their own people.
And why does this documentary blame a "white god" for all the problems
caused by the communist government of Laos? The filmmaker could have
gotten his point across in a less biased, less sensationalist, and more
honest way.
+Jared Franklin Yes, could not agree more. I lived in Thailand for five years. The governments and corrupt local people are the main perpetrators, not missionaries. The majority of missionaries don't even convert anyone (less than 2% Christian in population) This video is riddled with holes and filled with lack of understanding of both the hilltribes and the countries they live in. The author even lacks basic understanding of things like what public schools are like in Asia (very militant and strict). Then there are the unsubstantiated innuendos and suggestions that are not backed up by any, ANY evidence. The ending is laughable with him running from imaginary pursuers and hiding with imaginary friends. The whole film is basically him and his opinion and a few rumors.
