Well yeah. If you're not from America, I think the level of concern drops dramatically. If you're from America, one look at my peers or the youth nowadays, and you'd also be inclined to say "this generation is dead." I agree that not everyone can be lumped together. I go to a college full of intelligent, thoughtful people. I'm just saying, the majority of people are becoming stupider and stupider. There's nothing wrong with a guilty pleasure, but this show is huge and has an open following here.

And I go to college too, so my image of my peers is also pretty 'enhanced', because most of them that I come into contact with are all highly intellectual. I mean, we of course have some crazy people here like the ones on Jersey Shore, but they're generally regarded as, well, not really the kind of people to look up to. But I stand by my previous statement: a generation is an entire generation. America is not the norm. So when you say "generation", don't forget there are other countries as well.

Well, I must confess I can say nothing about America. I'm from Belgium and I do believe there is a pretty big gap between the norm in America and the norm in my country. In Belgium, a show like that would not easily be presented on TV. The audience would be very small, and those who would watch would probably view it as "a guilty pleasure, a bit of trash before a movie came on". I do think idiocracy is becoming more popular - sadly so - but I don't think everyone should be categorized as such?

Okay, this show looks awful. But I don't get that people are saying things like "this generation is dead" or whatnot. Like a reality show like this - and I use the term "reality" loosely, as we all know that anything on tv never is truly real - is a true image of what society is like? As if one glimpse on a few people is the equivalent of an entire generation? I'm from '91, I think a show like this is ridiculous, so I am not going to watch. People who do, fine. Its' their choice. So deal.

There's nothing different between JERRY SPRINGER's fake show stage players then these Jersey Show players.Jerry's all stage show drama players are being paid to take their shirts off & talk shit and show their boring &ugly bodies while in jersey show, they show a disorganized and dirty house that has been occupied by 6 or 7 unattractive people who don't have talent or look.I am not jealous, person but I just watched it to see what these monkeys are doing.lol

All the show does is promote lust and lies- two things which bring nations crashing down! The fact one of the main characters calls herself Sammy and is a girl is biggest joke of them all and outlines how terrible a show it is- Sammy is a guys name.

What's your idea for mainstream TV? There's hope to be had. Sherlock, Game of Thrones, Breaking Bad, Mad Men, and Futurama are just some of the great, intelligent shows airing this year. Plenty of great TV shows (LOST, the Wire, Sopranos) that are on DVD. Granted, most are on cable, and lots of network TV shows suck, but still. MTV is by no definition a mainstream channel. Lots of people think it's garbage. Not all...unfortunately...

The question is whether Jersey Shore is a symptom or a cause. You seem to think it's a cause. I personally believe it's a symptom. The fact that this trash can be on TV and be POPULAR is the issue. I'm sure the producers know it's a garbage show. I think it speaks a lot about this generation. Sure, it's generalizing, but as someone who is a part of this generation, I can attest that "idiocracy" is becoming the norm in America now.
