97 Sportster 1200 sport
I'm getting a noise Sounds similar to worn brakes rubbing, but it's not the
brakes.I suspect it may be coming from the clutch or gearbox - because - I
drove it at about 60kmh, pulled in the clutch and hit the kill switch. So
with the motor off, clutch pulled in, it still makes this rubbing noise.
Another thing is when I'm coming to a stop (with the bike running), slowed
down to about 15-20k the noise will stop - almost like something may have
dis-engaged, before I've come to a complete stop. Any ideas welcome !
Thanks
Thanks for video. The only thing I would add is to get your back tire off
the ground. Take your plugs out. Put the bike in 5th gear and rotate the
back wheel slowly while your checking the primary chain slack. Find the
tightest spot on the primary chain, then adjust if needed. That way you
don't put to much tension on the bearings. Thanks again bro. Rubber side
down.
Same here I just bought a 2003 Sportster 1200 custom and it's always good
to have some reference for the 1st time, Your video is a great help, you
rock bro! And don't worry about the drain plug it happens...just like
launcing my boat once with out installing the hull drain plug and its
scared the hell out of me.. LOL.
I like a lot ur videos man, very helpful . I have a sportster 2008 low 1200
n I just change the engine oil n the transmission oil , so they tell me @
the dealer that I can use the same engine oil for the transmission , so is
it? I used 20w50 ... Tnxs
By the way I like evanescence too!!
A guy should rotate the chain and find the tightest area before adjusting
it. You could adjust it to 1/2" in the looser area and it could be a 1/4"
in the tighter area. Theres always variation in chain slack as you rotate
the chain/sprockets. Same with bikes that have final drive chains.
I need some help with a 2008 Sportster 1200 l just purchased please give me
a call on my cell..l heard the best oil for primary and the engine is hands
down the Amsoil 20-50 here is my cell #..........4347101735 thanks.
Great vid thanks, I like your style and I will be looking for moe in the
future. Having said that...Did I miss the part where you said to put the
bike into Neutral before adjusting the Primary chain?
got a sporty last wk. my first H.D., called shop for oil change price.
250.00......watched your vid.. went and got all the stuff. did it myself.
even adjusted primary chain ....thxs brother
What a grate video!
I've seen so many other, and they are all very serious and boring.
Riding and look after your bike should be fun and sociable like you just
showed.
Thanks for this video.
"Don't charge your brothers, make sure they pay for the part an bring some
beers. and just have fun." damn this guy is cool an wise great guy man ride
on brother!
Thanks my man. Very strait forward, easy to understand instructions. I am
out to do mine right now. I will put the drain plug in before adding fluid.
LOL
I have been doing my oil changes on Harleys for 41 years.Food for thought:
Your top end is starving for oil for a good 60-90 secs. on start up.Fill
new filter 3/4 full before install. you may spill some til you get the hang
of it. Never use filter wrench to install new filter. Use both hands to
tighten filter. I wrap a piece of inner tube around filter to get good
grip. I just replaced oil filter mount on a Harley where owner used filer
wrench. $92.90+ labor at H-D. I did labor for free.
Great tutorial, thank you very much. I'm a lady that owns a 2012 Blackline
and a 1994 Heritage Softail Classic, and let me say that an oil change
seems very easy now after your post. I did notice some few useful comments
from others, not the axxholes that wanted you to look stupid, but the ones
that are really trying to help. So I will also take a note of those
comments as well. Knowing which screws have to be remove, having the right
tools and this video I'm ready to go. So thank you.
snug the oil filter well, then 1/4 - 1/2 turn more... also I believe the
torque spec is around 17-19ft lbs for the drain plugs (all 3).. dont use
loctite or teflon tape, just properly torque it. If you dont have a torque
wrench my mechanic says, good and tight but not gorrilla tight. Basically,
tighten by hand until it stops then nudge it slightly with a wrench.
Overall not a bad video, just some misinformation from whomever showed this
guy.. not his fault
@Hog0611 have ur bike standing straight up (not on the stand!) on a level
ground and fill the oil tell it touches the clutch u only want like a 1/4
inch of the clutch submerged in oil and if u have a lowering kit in just
the front or just the back it will be wrong then unless u have an even
lowering kit and if u have a bike older then 2000 i would not recomend
synthetic in the the primary cause it can make the clutch slip
Great videos but one suggestion for you is when you put the new oil filter
on you should only be making it hand tight don't use a wrench that is why
it's so hard to get it off, you should add a little oil to the filter maybe
4oz. As for your Derby cover bolts you should be using a torque wrench as
there's a torque value for these, not sure what it is for your bike. Thanks
again for posting.
I do have a queston. When you added the fluid to the primary case, how did
you know it was full? I do not want to overfill mine so is there a landmark
that will let me know i have added enough fluid? Thank you for the video
and nice bike. I have an electra glide. I am like eveyone else and can not
afford to go to the dealer for every service. Any help anyone can give
would be great.
At 1.25, the clutch cover screws are actually T27 size, not the T25 size
you guessed. That causes some trouble since most torque screw sets include
T25 size (which is a loose fit) and T30 size (which is too big). So many
people use the T25 bit which can easily round out the screw. It is very
important to obtain and use the correct T27 size bit ! Thanks for the
video, very good.
After going over the comments on my three videos most of them very helpful
others not so much (trolls are welcome to comment) I will do a revised
video on changing the oil using your comments. So in the next couple of
days I will do the videos and use your suggestions. And hope that it will
be even more useful for others. Thanks everyone for the comments and advise.
again clean around the area befor u put it back on! break cleaner works
great and the use a air house to blow it off and u only hand tighten it on!
holy shit man suprise u havnt striped the threads out yet. but u do have a
sick bike love the all black and the bars! but id get different rims on it
or atleast get spokes in the back blacked spokes woulb be awsome!
you screw it by hand until it fits perfectly. approximately 1 full turn
until the gasket touches the engine. after that if want to be sure you
screw it with the tool for only 1/4. basically just slightly more than
normal. if you screw it more than it needs, the engine does not have a
problem. but when you will try to remove it, it will be hard.
When changing the gearbox and primary oils, it is always good practice to
remove the filler orifice plugs first. If you remove the drain plugs first,
then let the oil run out, and then find that one of the filler orifice
screws is seized in place or rounded out, you have an immobilised vehicle
since you can't (easily) refill with oil.

How to Change Transmission Lube on Harley-Davidson Touring Models by J&P Cycles
Patrick from J&P Cycles shows you how to change the transmission fluid on a Harley Davidson Street Glide. Includes every step from oil drain and fill to checking ...
I keep hearing check the fluid level with the bike leaning on the kick
stand. it WILL over fill it. Then I hear warm it up first then check it
without leaning the bike on the kick stand. It seems that you would want to
check without leaning it because that will be the position the bike would
be in when going down the road right???? (upright)
The bike is to be sitting straight up level when checking the fluid level
and you do not screw the dipstick in to check level you. Sit it on to check
and when finished screw it on. This guy is a tard.
+rdam64 Correct!! My '15 Road King and my '13 Switchback were both the same. Service manual clearly stated to check the transmission with the motorcycle on the jiffy stand and do not tighten the dipstick, but run it in until the O ring touches and that is the correct position to check the fluid level. It also stated to start with 28 oz. then check the level. My '15 Road King takes exactly 30 oz. of transmission fluid to hit the full mark.
+truedatmusting Wrong. Depends on what year you have. My 14 owners manual and SERVICE MANUAL says check on jiffy stand, screw in till O ring contacts. Fluid amounts are a little different calling for 28oz (.83L). Older bikes were checked upright...You're Welcome.
thanks for the video. couple questions:
1) is there a specific oil filter # that I need to look for? everyone just
keeps saying to get a "harley davidson oil filter" do they only make one
that fits all their recent bikes??
2) i read that one shouldn't switch to synthetic for the first 3k miles as
the 'normal' oil has a lot of properties that are required to break in the
pistons/etc properly, that synthetic can't provide.
3) i have close to 400 miles on my 2014 muscle (got it a month ago), and
winter is coming soon, so will need to winterize her. should i drain and
refill now? or wait for another 600 miles next year?
TIA
thanks for the comment. Here's the answers to your questions: paul is correct, it does not matter, synthetic is fine. Yes you would need to go with the HD filter recommended directly by Harley Davidson for many reasons including threading issues that may or may not occur. Your last question at this point, did you wait? I would've waited till I had 1000 miles it wouldn't matter, however I live in the south so I ride my bike all year long.
+Andrzej Raczynski That's a myth about not being able to use full synthetic before 3k miles, you can use it from day 1 on a brand new motor. Look at Amsoil's site one of the best synthetic oils around, Mobile 1 for Vtwins is good too.
Motorcycle Repair: How to Change the Transmission Oil Fluid on a 2009 Harley Davidson Softail Custom

I am so freaken greatful for this vid.... cause I had no clue that my
tranny drain plug was in between the shocks...lol I kept looking at the
book and the bottom of the motor and they were not lining up... in my
brain.... I have the 110 motor on my softail.. and I am just about there in
mileage to change that fluid....I thank you very much smallengineshop for
putting this Vid on Youtube :)
Why are you calling the oil, transmission fluid? It is you're oil pan and
it just so happens to lube the transmission as well but calling it strictly
transmission is misleading to some.
I think Harley Davidson recommends changing the transmission fluid on a 2009 Harley Davidson Softail Custom at 1500 miles, than every 20,000 miles. Double check that in the service manual for your motorcycle.
