The National Association to Advance Fat People Acceptance is outraged over First Lady Michelle Obama's campaign to fight childhood obesity. Cenk Uygur and ...
Im sorry, in general I like TYT but I do feel like they could get more
research and discussion points in their videos. The criticism is that the
way the campaign is promoted is too much about aesthetics and not enough
about getting healthy in general. This would be a great topic for a
discussion, but it demands looking more into the arguments of the Fat
People Acceptance group and Michelle Obamas campaign what it actually
consists of and how its promoted. I get that this is difficult to do
because you guys have to regularly put out many short videos to make money,
but it is just dishonest if you just show your gut reactions to a headline
or a summary of the issue without doing research but accuse mainstream
media of doing the same (even if you guys are usually a lot nicer in
presenting your viewpoint). The thing is you do pretty well when it comes
to politics because its a field your familiar with but every other topic
often seems just to be a collection of kneejerk reactions
//www.cnsnews.com/news/article/first-ladys-anti-obesity-campaign-turned-heavy-children-targets-group-sayscns news posted the whole video where she states that The National Association to Advance Fat People Acceptance actually like her campaign, but if it only focuses on obesity you single out fat kids as "the problem" and from what I remember from school fat kids often get bullied "for their own good" or if they didn't want to be bullied they should just start to lose weight. In their opinion, it would have been better if the campaign had a more general approach. Speaking from personal experience, you can get thin if you do cardio all day and count ur calorines but then your goal is just an aesthetic one. If ur mindset is just to lose weight its likely ull neglect strenght training out of fear to look to bulky, whereas if ur mindset is to get healthy independent from what society says ur body should look like, ur more likely to make a training routine and form eating habits that benefit ur health. And I do think that its important to educate kids in the latter category.Another criticism that is tied to that point is that Obamas campaign is not aggressive enough against the lobbying of the food industry. (more on that here: //www.buzzfeed.com/evanmcsan/top-administration-allies-embrace-film-critical-of-michelle#.tjZb1dPOd) The thing is if you really want to cure obesity you have to aggressively fight the food industry. Think of how coca cola promotes their products nowadays: "Oh yeah you can totally drink a coke if you just run around a lot".. like no. you can exercise all you want but that doesnt make the fatty sugary food you eat any healthier. The thing is that Michelle picked the easier way out by focusing on exercise, and dont get me wrong I still think her campaign does help reducing obesity just in very small steps but it distracts from the underlying issues. And an Obama picking the middle ground to avoid lobbyist backlash? Kinda weird that Cenk didnt mention this in the video and I think he would have if it was a topic he was more familiar with. I mean I get that they cant read up on every topic and they have to make a bunch of short videos very quickly to make money but I still wish their videos were a bit more informative now and then, if you're just reacting to something by simplifying the issue and and painting any side of the debate as an over-sensitive idiot, then you dont even generate interest for the topic. Ur just ensuring that the next time Tyt viewers see and article about the NAAFPA that they will immediatly dismiss it without reading up on the topic.
+JoinTheHabbit How is promoting exercise and nutrition about aesthetics? And I'm honestly asking. Because in all the publicizing of Michelle's campaign, that's all I've ever heard being promoted.
+PARASNIP They only go against people who don't agree with them. They never talked about the time that Michelle Obama made the comment "all this for a damn flag" at a 9/11 memorial. Instead they make videos about fat kids getting mad at Michelle's completely FORCED "healthy" school lunch. There is no reason not to get mad at her for forcing a number of states to change their lunch menu. This is one way the young turks are bias.
well, unlike lets say, Fox News, they dont lie about their position, and claim to be "fair and balanced".i dont see where it says theyre not allowed to be biased do you?
sometimes I think Americans lost perspective. come to Europe or Japan (but
not maybe not the UK) to learn what normal means. Hell yeas we have some
fat people here too, but I used to be fat and was L size in the US.
