Let me tell you, as a video editor there are a thousand little elaborate and detailed tips I can think of that one could use in video production. However, if I am allowed only one tip to share, I would definitely say to have the camera itself, prepared. By this I mean have the camera and all the additional equipment to be properly charged, adjusted, and with ample storage. This is so important because you never when the perfect moment for footage may past and then DARN IT you just missed a golden shot. Let me give you an example of a how I masterfully missed a shot that people would have spilled Benjamin Franklins to see. I wasn't there to see the game myself but I recorded the live stream footage from my computer (rookie move). I decided to do it because I thought people would want to watch the game over and over again, so I didn't make it a high quality video just something convenient to watch. Long story short, the game-winning point was coming up so if you're watching the whole thing, pay attention around 6:50 to see what happened. Then read the comments to the video for further pleasure!

When interviewing children I tend to let them interview me for a while with the camera in order to build rapport. 

If you want to record voice-over, a good idea is to record inside a closet, this way you can prevent reverb. (I learned this on Indy Mogul, really miss the channel.)

Always remember to turn your mic on (before filming).

Make sure your equipment is actually on & rolling! ;)

Put a piece of string over the lens to create lens flare.

Best tip for editing is to trim the fat!! Don't leave long shots without purpose.
