You might like Little Star by John Ajvide Lindqvist - it's very dark and
violent, but it's precisely because it is so psychologically compelling
that it has an impact. The author has said of the protagonist that he
refuses to call her a psychopath, because of how she was raised. It's a
very dark take on, among other things, the search for love.
Such a fantastic review Jean! I just finished this book off a couple of
days a go. Hauntingly beautiful. It has a sort of morbid/macabre(?) feel to
it to me too. Now I'm telling everyone I know that enjoys books like this
to find it and read it.
Well, I'm sold. I have to get this one. I also really love books that start
where they end. There's something so fascinating about that sort of cycle,
and also it really motivates you to read on to find out how you arrive at
that point. Great review!
I am really scared by creepy books. The Simon Beckett books are really
popular here in Germany and they freaked me out. But your and Jen's reviews
made me buy The Dumb House.. The field of linguistics is a huge part of my
studies and so I am really interested in the topic the book deals with. I
hope it won't scare me too much.
Fantastic review. I'm not into super creepy books because I am a big wimp,
but describing it as a psychological thriller makes me think I could handle
it and I want to give it a try because of your rave review
+rincey reads definitly! It isn't like American Psycho or the Saw movie things (I speak as if I've seen them aha but I imagine), it is far more than that :). Really delves into this strange man's life.
Loving the quality of the new camera, I know it doesn't have anything to do
with the content of the video, but it looks great! I was already intrigued
by The Dumbhouse, because it seems to be one of those beautiful yet dark
books, and now I must read it! Hopefully I can get my hands on it :).
You MUST read The Collector by John Fowles. Once again another story of a
psycho/sociopath who entraps people. It's about a young man who collects
butterflies that is obsessed with this beautiful art student, so obsessed
with her that he kidnaps her and keeps her in his basement. The first half
of the story is told from his perspective, which is fascinating, and the
second half is told from the girl's perspective, which is just as amazing!
It's now one of my favourite books, despite how dark and infuriating it
was. You'll love it.
Ahhh your reviews always get me. I believe this will be my first book
purchase when I get there!
You could definitely hurt my wallet. haha!
Great job! xx
I'm surprised that vintage regards this as a classic having been published
in 1997. I'm one for messed up books too lol I'm looking forward to reading
it. Every time I watch a video I get more excited for it. Great review
+Carolyn Storer oh yeah I definitely agree! I think it would be termed maybe as more of a modern classic but it's great to hear about some more Scottish books!
+chboskyy I think for me a classic has to 'stand the test of time' as well as being 'note-worthy' along with many other factors. I think the question 'what makes a book a classic?' will have a different answer from different people.
+chboskyy I suppose I just go by the fact that Vintage and Penguin both have classifications of 'classics' and 'modern classics' and therefore 1997 wouldn't really fit into that and would rather be 'contemporary fiction' but maybe that's just how my head sees it lol

Thanks man, I like trying to figure out "fairy tales" that people try to
prove by twisting facts and inventing "new things*" I guess you could say
it's a hobby of mine. But again, all I'm trying to do is understand it, and
link it with the Bible, but so far I don't see any way. Oh, and when you
say my name on your video, you can call me Daniel Jaeger if you like.
Jaeger is pronounced with a J, not a Y, like Yaeger. Yeah, it's about
12:30am here too, so I'm gonna check out. Thanks again! -Daniel
Natural selection is the basic principle of evolution. Other animals aren't
developing high intelligence because there is no selective pressure TO
DEVELOP HIGH INTELLIGENCE. OTHER TRAITS ARE SELECTED ON. HIGH INTELLIGENCE
IS A TRAIT. NATURAL SELECTION IS THERE. SELECTION FOR THIS PARTICULAR TRAIT
IS NOT. Please stop picking which parts to pay attention to and which ones
to be oblivious to. Watch the videos, do the reading and then come back.
Kabane reads both sides of arguments, you should try
How did I know that you would say that? Gilmaris just tore you apart. Now I
suppose I will repeat what he said. Selective pressure is when one trait is
selected for and passed on to successive generations. Such a trait will be
selected for if it lends reproductive success. Additional brainpower lends
no such reproductive success for other animals. They are selectively
pressured to develop other traits which do grant reproductive success. You
know nothing about evolution, go learn about it.
"So how could he allow himself to be represented by something that evolved
from an animal?" Uh, why not? Do you have any reason to think he won't? Or
was your statement simply an appeal to ridicule. "Who knows what those
"somethings" will turn into in the next few billion years? " Nothing new,
if our current technological advancement continues. Medicine has removed
selective pressure. Honestly man, give up. I've studied this issue for
years, and I can tell you know nothing about it.
dogs produce what we call dogs. every offspring is slightly different from
its parents. if you were to live a million years, you might say "hey, these
things don't really look like the dogs i've seen a million years ago, even
though they're descended from them". change and adaptation of this kind has
been observed on fast-multiplying bacteria and viruses. proven and done.
the Bible is not meant to provide us with scientific facts. God gave us big
brains to find out for ourselves.
My "Magic Book" is the Bible, which Kabane claims to believe 100% of! And
Twisted facts? Just look at our debates! The facts from him are twisted:
Yes, that existed, oh, but now it doesn't, because, if it still existed, it
would disprove evolution. It's all geared to support evolution, and to defy
Creation. New things invented? Evolution itself is an invention by Charles
Darwin, not by God! And if you call the Bible a fairy tale, you might as
well forget the whole debate.
What I meant by reading both parts were understanding the basics first. You
clearly don't know what the difference between natural selection and
selective pressures are. Your understanding of the Bible comes from a
literal interpretation of an English translation. The bible may be God's
perfect word, but not when it's interpretted and translated into another
man's language. Maybe Eve referred to what we know as mitochondrial Eve.
Maybe the 6 days didnt mean 144 hours.
So, you're saying that dogs produce dogs, cats produce cats, horses produce
horses, but what about apes producing apes, fish producing fish, and
untimely, humans producing humans? And hey, I know about evolution, but my
point is, it contradicts the Bible. The Bible says "out of the GROUND (not
the water) God formed EVERY living creature that walks on the face of the
earth." (not swims in the water) And humans were created on the sixth day,
not the fifth. (continued)
selective pressure is not one thing. It is a combination of forces. Imagine
a phone number, the combination of numbers matters. It is a emergent
property something grater than the sum of its parts. It is the ecosystem
evolving. A chance mutation to a protein effecting the jaw muscles, the
bridge where muscle was attached became smaller, now the scull was able to
expand and the brain could get bigger. The smarter ones figured out more
ways to get nutrients and so on.
"These contradict each other." How? Selective pressure is a natural
principle of evolution, YES. But selective pressure is provided by the
environment: not ALL selective pressures will push a species toward
evolving bigger brains. Other animals have selective pressures, too, just
not toward evolving higher intelligence. We tend to prize intelligence
because it is our specialisation, after all. A cheetah would prize
exceptional speed above exceptional intelligence.
scientific evidence doesn't set out to prove ideas. The idea was that if
evolution were correct, then to account for the change in number of
chromosomes between those 2 species. There must have been a fusion of two
chromosomes. They did their research and realized, hey, they did fuse. This
is means that idea has gained more evidence. Not common ancestry as thus
been proved. Its been "proved" because of the mountains of evidence that
collectively come together.
hmm "the genius of charles darwin"...i would say to that and all dawkins
based doco's...its a great documentary but the dawkins would not go over
well and most people would claim a anti-god bias in the film and being a
christian school most of the students would likely not listen to what he
has to say...a unbiased or slightly christian biased film would be
better..in fact anything by ken miller or other christian evolutionist
would probably be the best choice.
The reason why God WOULD NOT is this: how do you know if those "somethings"
which evolved from animals won't turn into swine or giant sloths? Would
that be a good way to represent God? ABSOLUTELY NOT! "Nothing new" You just
admitted that there would not be any change. So how can you support
evolution? I thought evolution lives on things changing, slowly but surely.
And what about people who have never had "medicine" such as natives? Why
aren't they changing?
"Other animals aren't developing high intelligence because there is no
selective pressure to do so..." Where did the "selective pressure" come
from which caused apes to develop high intelligence? And hey, I'm trying to
understand evolution, because you say it goes along with the Bible. But so
far, honestly, I see absolutely no similarities with the Bible and
evolution, because it contradicts the Bible itself.
Wow man, what a crazy situation you are in. I just can't even imagine
putting myself in your place. I think you are probably dealing with the
Creationists at your school in the best way possible though. I think that
once they realize that they can have their faith and real science at the
same time, you might just change a few opinions, maybe open up a few minds.
That's all you can really try to do.
its a free country but you should not talk like you like christmas thats a
holyday for christians but for the rest... its good to debate about some
things but most no party would take the others proofs serious evo's
declares that crea's are dump and crea's think evo's are just dump but
laughing with a kid that talks wierd is a proof you are not to be taken
serious sorry (that mister... thinks)
@DanielJaegerFilms: Natural selection accounts for survival. Intelligence
is a feature that humans excel in, while we do poorly at breathing under
water. The ability to breathe underwater with gills is how fish excel,
while they aren't very smart at the same time. It depends on the situation
where the features are pressured for arise. Intelligence isn't the only
feature that can be pressured.
well then ok i said that debates are good but that neither side would
accept each others evidence i'm a creationist but i think that some parts
seem logic and i accept the evidence of that to to me its not black or
white, its grey and if everybody would think like that then we could finaly
see our true history (i have a degree in art history so history is impotant
to me)
Are you referring to humans? They wouldn't change into an existing animal,
even if there were selective pressure. We aren't changing right now because
there is no selective pressure being applied. Up in Europe, about 13% of
the populace is immune to plague. Why? Because from one person, a mutation
happened during that outbreak and was selected for.
I love how you call Scientific theories fairy tales but dont say the same
about your magic book. What facts have been twisted? What new things have
been invented? If anything, the only twisting comes from creationists who
twist ideas so that they are blind to the deductive and logical processes
and conclusions anyone should be able to understand.
I'd recommend "The Genius of Charles Darwin" series, by Dawkins which is
here on YouTube if you haven't seen it already, but I don't know if it
would go over so well in a Christian school. Maybe you can school this
Daniel Jaeger guy a bit with a video, but I'd wager it would be something
like showing your dog a card trick! Good to see you back!
you just proved what i said evolutionists cant withstand criticism, and iff
they get criticismthen they make themselves ridiculous by giving childish
repleys just like you did with that kid in your class you have your
believings, dont start on other peoples believings your like a radical
muslim, they are allso selfish
Also...if your priest knows slightly more about your relgion and the bible
than you do. A bishop probably knows slightly more than that priest. The
pope most likely knows more than that bishop. The pope made an official
statement saying that Evolution and scientific reasoning and the Bible are
not mutually exclusive.
"In his own image, in ancient Hebrew literature, referred to our ability to
represent God on Earth." Exactly! We are here to REPRESENT GOD! So how
could he allow himself to be represented by something that evolved from an
animal? Who knows what those "somethings" will turn into in the next few
billion years?
Kabane, It's been a while since I've watched a video of yours. I used to
watch because I like hearing you talk about evolution and ID. Something I
noticed was that your face is maturing. I'm proud of you for taking first
place and for competing in debate to begin with. Keep up the good work.
I'm paying attention to ALL the parts that he has mentioned to me. Although
I assume there are a lot of things that evolutionists DON'T want me to
know. Hmm, maybe I know those already, which is why evolution isn't making
sense to me, and ESPECIALLY why it CAN'T be linked with the Bible.
Yeah, a private school should be able to teach anything it wants to. I
would prefer they would teach ID in the religion class, rather than the
science class. Its pretty cool that they let you show a pro-evolution film
though. Keep fighting the good fight, don't grow weary in welldoing.
I watched the video. I'm confused. You say "natural selection" is a basic
principle of evolution. Then you say "Other animals aren't developing high
intelligence because there is no selective pressure to do so..." First
you're saying it's there, next you're saying it's not there.
