It's time again to make some zero clearance table saw throat plates. I planed a piece of oak to the thickness of the existing throat plates for my Powermatic 72 ...
I don´t get it why non of the US table saws have this "fin" integrated. In
Germany this is standard or better said prescripted by regulations. The
"fin" here is out of steel and linked to the table saw blade mechanism, so
the distance to the blade is permanent about 5mm or .2inch. And it can be a
real life saver if you work with solid wood (with a lot if tension inside),
cause if you cut wood and it widens on the inner sides the blade CAN shoot
the wood back in a deadly velocity.
+Jasper Jones All new saws do have riving knives like you describe. Frank using a classic Powermatic saws that were made way before the safety police were involved with woodworking tools.
I did it even simpler--placed a brass screw into the wooden insert in line
and behind the blade, then filed the profile to be about the same thickness
as the blade. It has been in business for over a year now with no signs of
wear. No kick backs, prevents wedging effect and wood burning. Also helps
to push the board to the fence. Small size but works great even on thicker
boards...
Thanks for planting the seed for this idea... I had an after market riving
knife for my old unisaw that wasn't very stable and when using my crosscut
sled got pushed back down into the blade sending metal shards everywhere...
lucky I didn't lose an eye (I had forgotten to wear my goggles for that
cut).
I took that thing off and made a new insert with this feature and so far I
love it. I did the single fin design and made mine 1/4" shy of full blade
height, it looks pretty sweet too.
I will try the fin idea. It seems to be much more practical than my riving
knife, which is cumbersome - so I don't use it. My normal method if the
wood starts to bind is to just stick a wedge in the wood after it passes
the blade.
By the way, I have never had a problem with plywood binding on the blade.
+Lester Barrett I find it helps keep plywood against the fence.

Great work Rich, thanks.
Finally received my Axial Yeti XL kit, and completed it.
Came up a treat, can't wait to try. (winter here in Melbourne, and we are
in the middle of Antarctic driven spell)
You so reminded me I need a wrench! I'll check out my local Hobby Shop and
Ebay.
I do have a variety of brands and sized cars so I think I'll try to get
something to cover most if not all.
Vorza, Slash, Mini Revo, Mini 8T, and Yeti XL.
CheersHave picked up a TLR wrench with 3.5, 4 & 5 mm. Really compact, light weight and appears to be well made. $13 Aus (~$10 US) so good value as well!
