Crossing the ice road over the Mackenzie River Part 2
Crossing the final part of the Mackenzie River over the ice road near Fort Providence, Northwest Territories. The trucker in this clip looked very uncertain of ...
The best time is probably in mid March, when I crossed it. This ice road
opens in early January and closes sometime in early April. It stays open
even once the water on top starts to flow... not for the faint of heart! If
you want to go up to Tuk, you'll have to go through Yukon and then on the
Dempster Highway up to Inuvik. There's no ice road between Yellowknife and
Inuvik, unfortunately. There's an ice road on the Mackenzie that runs for
something crazy like 1,100km up to Fort Good Hope.
OH ya Roy , that must be you. Working, driving to Good Hope and back. Man
rough road, couldn't go any faster than i was then. Went there when road
was brand new, was hitting 125. 5 hour drive from Colville to Nwells and 2
hours from the Good hope turnoff. F*cken people there thought i had wing's,
lol.
I think the "Ice Road Trucker" that I met this weekend should do a series
on this one. Make detours away from the new bridges and put in wooden log
bridges for him to cross for the show even.
That winter road should be advertised as an Unlimited Rally Race. The
average speed of 50 km / hour isn't even considered a Road. Enhanced
snowmobile trail - if that.
It was good when it's new, before the trucks start making ruts. 5 hours
total from Colville Lake to Nwells. 2 hours from the Fort Good hope turnoff
to Norman Wells.
