a colleague of mine who is just today attending a conference at UT Austin,
shared this video with me. It brings some perspective to today's unfolding
events there.
This is a Biographical Documentary about Charles Whitman, a man who climbed to the top of a clock tower at the University of Texas and began shooting people ...
Shame on Katherine Ramsland for parroting the tired old *his mother didn't
protect him from his father's violence so he had to kill her* line. This
theory is often applied in relation to men who kill 'random' women too; *all
you bitches must now suffer.* Whilst I fully understand that any abused
child would be angry at their mother for failing to protect them - I think
that the brunt of the anger would be reserved for the actively abusive
parent - in this case as in many others - the father. But as ever the
women take the brunt of the rage. Whitman had insight into his mother's
suffering, as his letter testifies *she took enough of his beatings,
humiliation, degradation and tribulations* so there was obviously a great
deal of awareness of the dynamics of the household - who was the
aggressor. What a shame he didn't take his rifle over to his father's
house and hold *him* to account. I suspect he was simply afraid to.

I was surprised to read the tower is again open to the public, albeit with
strict rules. When I was a student at UT I guess we assumed this would
never happen, so I have never seen the amazing view. During orientation in
my day the bullet damage of Whitman's missed shots were a part of campus
history and much was made of them during the campus tour. After seeing only
holes in statues etc. I must admit an uncomfortable feeling knowing people
can once again access the observation deck.
It makes me so angry that the psychiatrist never took it seriously when
Charles Whitman told him what was going on in his mind! In my eyes, he's
partly responsible! He may not have pulled the trigger, but he had the
power to prevent it & he chose not to! Sadly, this is not the only case of
such negligence! Charles Whitman spoke out while he still knew he needed
help & he was denied that help! Disgusting!
They fail to say that he also killed his mom and left an intriguing written
note by her body.
To Whom It May Concern: I have just taken my mother's life. I am very upset
over having done it. However, I feel that if there is a heaven she is
definitely there now [...] I am truly sorry [...] Let there be no doubt in
your mind that I loved this woman with all my heart.
You have the deadliest university shooting up until then by what normally
seems to be a reasonable and loving person, according to those in his life,
and there also happenings to be a rapidly growing tumor in his brain but it
played no part?
I thought the Tumor was surrounding the Amygdala, which is the center for
emotions and motivation. I also think that the Tumor is what caused Charles
to go on a killing spree.
