I agree that the factory grips are too short, but they are easily replaced with something larger. Hogue makes excellent aftermarket grips for the SP101.
+iyn1911 To actually answer your question, Ruger is the only major manufacturer that actually recommends dry firing their revolvers. It's perfectly safe to do so with a ruger.
According to Ruger and the manual you can dry fire it, but I spent ~10 bucks on a bag of snap caps to make sure I didn't damage the cylinder. Apparently small plastic molly bolts can do in a pinch as well
Asking if you can dry fire any gun in a loaded question with people on both sides of the issue. For a general rule, never dry fire a firearm you do not own unless you are purchasing it from said person and want to test the trigger, and never even think about dry firing a gun you haven't checked to make sure is unloaded yourself. That out of the way, it will be more wear on this gun to dry fire it as opposed to firing with snap caps or empty casing, but even with thousands of dry fires you will not cause any significant damage or inhibitory wear to the firearm.
+Andy Comella I have yet to purchase a gun that I wanted to sell. I am not an impulse buyer and tend towards a lot of research before buying. And I don't have enough guns to be considered a 'collecter'. Although I will use this Ruger for some plinking, this was not my primary reason for buying it. There are certainly more econonical 22's for plinking. I have a Bersa Thunder 22 (10+1) with 5 mags that has been pretty much 100% reliable. The few hicups have been with remington bulk. And it was 1/2 the price of the Ruger.
+Andy Comella I would be surprised if you could find one used. I have never seen one in a gun shop, new or used. I signed up on Davidson's GOG for a notification when available. I got the email 2 weeks ago and picked the gun shop with best price in my area. I paid $604 out the door. Some shops wanted close to $700, and the msrp is $719. I have even seen it online in the $750 range. A beautiful revolver, great sights and a great shooter. Even with the heavy trigger. I'll work on that later.
