Cindy Herron-Braggs: Studio Vocal Range En Vogue
The last of the group individual videos. Give it up for Cindy Herron. She was the soprano that alternated frequently with Dawn's edgier voice. Cindy had a very ...
Thank you for commenting! Cindy or Dawn usually alternated the top, and the
other would take second. Terry was generally the alto (but she had done all
four roles at least once). Max was regulated to the bottom. They did switch
it up a few times though. Also thanks for the light lyric. Could I ask if
you could identify what Terry and Dawn are. I thought Dawn was a lyric
soprano, and Terry I am convinced is a soprano as well (if not she is one
of the brightest sounding mezzos on the planet).
I agree with you; I always thought Cindy would be the breakout star closely
followed by Terry because of their looks and stunning voices. Maxine and
Dawn both have amazing voices as well that stand the test of time, but they
seem to be more power house vocalists that stand out within a group whereas
Cindy and Terry are very different singers. The En Vogue formula was truly
ahead of its time as solo divas making one group - it is what will always
make En Vogue legendary!
I agree. Cindy is my fav in terms of vocal ability. She has managed to
maintain her voice over the years (as of late she is becoming much more
conservative though). Dawn was the wildcard, she could really be on it, or
she was really just not on point. Max lost some of her strength in her
upper region, but has gained amazing skill in her lower. Terry lost some
power, but she still has a wonderful voice, and is in really good shape.
Thank you, I am no expert though!
This is going to be a long comment so I apologize. First I don't think I
have ever heard or read about a Spinto-mezzo. If they did exist, Max would
definitely not be one. She is a pretty standard lyric. Womanly voice, good
lower register, and brightens up as she ascends in her range. Cindy is a
soprano. Her voice is light, and she has a bright timbre. The only reason
she has a good lower register is because she had vocal training.
The only member of En Vogue that seems to have OFF times to me is Dawn. Of
late, Maxine seems to have lost some of her vocal strength tho. And dammit,
i think Terry''s gotten better. For some reason, Cindy's always been my fav
and I generally go for the belters (like Terry) Thanx for taking the time
to make these vids and teaching us a thing or two about singing. Love them
all
Thank you for commenting. I swear I get mixed up with this group. You're
right, that is Max. I thought Cindy and Max were doing some sort of
exchange before Max started her verse. Anyway, when it comes to checking
notes, I know people just practice it until they get it perfect or good
enough, or some just use a tuner, or some sort of software and then check.
Cindy is such a class act. She never had an off day to me. She just adjust
to whatever the condition is. I am surprised she did not have a solo album.
She is, imo, the most versatile vocally, and can play up different genres
well. Not to mention she is pretty, and has amazing stage presence.
I'm not too familiar with their names and roles within the group but I've
always been in awe of what beasts they all are. I love her C#5s in
Whatever. That's one of my fav En Vogue songs and that's my fav part of the
song. I'd class her as a Light Lyric Soprano or maybe even a Soubrette.
I definately think Terry is a soprano. Her head voice >>>>>>>>>>>>> She has
a bright timbre and great ease and control throughout her chest range. She
doesn't have to mix a lot for the upper chest belts. She's definately a
soprano. I think she's possibly a Light Lyric Soprano.
@3:44 (What is Love?) That F5 is Maxine. And, again, I do love and enjoy
your vids, cause though I have a great ear for timbre and such, I had no
idea (w/o varifying w/ a keyboard) the actual notes sung. Great video!
Thank you for it.
Great job. Thank you for this upload! I know there's a video of Cindy
singing a verse in a very low key. Search for the song "Rising" by En Vogue
feat. Natalia on YouTube. Listen to her at the 1:30 mark. Enjoy!
Yep. Also about your last comment. Cindy has yet to show any sort of use of
the whistle register. She has only done a C#6 (in studio I don't know her
live range yet), but I wouldn't put it past her.
It's obvious that the MC note is extended by studio tricks including an
echo chamber. Rachelle is the best all around singer i've ever heard....she
has many weapons in her arsenal and the Great Betty Wright is just pure
power and at 60 i'm sure can still hit those whistles. Rachelle can too at
age 52 going 53.
Mariah > Betty > Rachelle. Mariah's note was held for 13 seconds with no
drop in support and a crystal clear, beautiful tone. Rachelle's note was
shrill as hell and she went flat at the end. Betty's was better, but not up
there with Mariah's.
There is nothing more disturbing than seeing genuineness being muddled with
dishonesty. It is quite obvious that MC's whistle is computerized. On that
Note Rachelle Ferrell is the winner here followed by Betty Wright.
Betty has the best technique. Rachelle's note just sounds painfull, i
really dont find it nice. Mariah sounds very nice even if the note is not
loud and strong. So i would say Betty and Mariah.
Poor Christina... This is just a joke, okay? Even though I am not a fan of her voice, I must say that I love her falsetto/whistle register! Sounds very angelic, but not ...
Many stans make videos of Mariah something like that she has lost her
voice. How about Christina? I don't care what people say about Christina's
performance, it was terrible. I actually like Christina, just not as a
vocalist. This video was just a little joke, but many of us (who actually
knows who is good and who is not) tries to show that Christina is a
horrible vocalist. -Yes, she was not doing a whistle. She was screaming. Is
that pleasant to the ears? She is not creative with her voice.
She always had potential. A very unique voice as a kid. Christina said
herself that she never had vocal lessons, which is obvious! XD She is doing
the EXACT opposite of the real, great vocalists. She was fine when she
started in the late 90's, because she could go higher, and her voice was
fresh... But since she singing (screaming actually) with her belts, runs
etc. in a wrong way, it has really affected her voice, so now it's gone!
She was in her "prime" for a short time, while Mariah, Whitney, Barbra etc
were in their primes for a very long time! Christina's voice has been more
bad for a longer time than good. It's sad she never took lessons. She
really had potential, but I don't think it's possible for her to sound good
as she would've when she started. ^-^
Everyone know it's just a childish video made by a Stan to poke fun at
Christina even though she got a standing ovation that night & they say it
was the third most memorable Grammy performance off all time . Everyone
knows she was not doing a whistle here . I video feels like it was made by
a 7 year old it's so infantile .
Again, stupid and childish video. She only screamed because James Brown
would scream in some of his performances, and she wasn't doing a whistle
here. She can whistle, she proved that in the song What A Girl Wants and
Pero Me Acuerdo de Ti. And just recently she did it on The Voice.
First of all... This is a God damn joke! I know she is screaming because of
James. Second of all... No, she RARELY uses the whistle register. I only
heard her doing that twice. She uses falsetto actually. Not whistle
register.
Yes she was screaming & yes it was on purpose . Anyone who knows about
music & surprised you don't know she clearly did it as a tribute to James
Brown . James Brown would scream in some of his performances to
It's Christina. When Christina's singing, it doesn't sound like singing,
rather than sounding like a drill, or in this case, like she got
coakroaches in her clothes.
