I once was at a bus stop and a woman asked me if I had any food or some spare change because she had to go see a doctor in a nearby hospital (where I live healthcare is free) and she was really hungry. I gave her food and a little bit of change and she asked me if I wanted to see her medical documents or anything like that because she didn't want me to believe that she was just making something up, I told her that I believed her, she was surprised and she told me that that was nice of me but that I probably shouldn't, because most people asking for money make up their stories so that people feel compelled to give them money. She was really nice and told me how ashamed she felt of having to do that. after a while her bus came and by the time my bus got to the hospital's stop I saw that she was buying a cup of something hot to drink (that happened in the middle of the winter) from a street vendor and eating what I had given to her. It felt really refreshing to see someone so honest.

real homeless people never panhandle and don't keep company with those that do. I have been homeless and know all to well. never give money to anyone asking.
