Poorly Jaguar Engine
If anyone has any ideas whats up with this poor thing.. its an 1987 Jaguar XJS V12 5.3ltre...It sounds to me like a cog in the starter motors skipping... But im no ...
That's the sound of the solenoid jumping in and out which is a classic dud
battery symptom. The alternative is a short in the starter but that's
highly unlikely. Try a good battery. Also on V12's the connections have to
be super clean otherwise the load will drag the voltage to the starter down
due to high resistance- I had this problem with mine.
Just cured that problem on mine. It was the gearshift lockout switch. Had a
very poor ground. There is a relay on the firewall with a wire that goes to
ground via the switch. Just ground the relay on the engine. It means the
starter will crank in gear so don't try that- make sure in neautral or
park.
This is definitely a battery problem. But you have to ask yourself why is
the battery flat? Check your charge rate with a multimeter and then either
sort the alternator or replace the battery dependent on which is playing up.
