Hi. This XJS is a Japan spec car, which is almost the same as the Euro spec cars and has 4 cats in total, 2 in the downpipes and two in the back, I mean before of the intermediate pipes, I mean before the axle over pipes. The US spec cars also have 4 cats but they are all located right after the downpipes and 2 silencers before the axle over pipes. In addition, the Japan and Euro spec cars have larger inner dia intermediate pipes than the US spec cars, the formers have 54mm(5 1/4") while the latter 50.8mm(2").So if you are in the US it is a kind of PITA job to do the same. If you have a Euro spec car, straight through pipes substituting the rear cats will make this sound.Bad aspect is that you will lose the low end torque, and that there will be drone around 1500-2000rpm, which is a bit noisy when running in a town speed. I couldn't stand those and finally changed my pipes to smaller 2" pipes for older models. 2" pipes are a bit too quiet though. I think it is because they are made of mild steel, if made in thinner wall stainless it will be much better.
Beautiful car!!! Thanks for the info. Ive always wanted one of these and
am finally actively searching. I hope you dont mind if I pick your brains
a bit: Any pearls of wisdom for choosing the right one? Any particular
years that are better than others that you? where do you go for performance
parts? Im currently looking at an 89 coupe but there are a couple of mid
90's available in my area. Thanks for your time.
If you want to keep the car for a long time, you should choose a car with clean interior. Most of the interior parts are NLA, and once hurt it can hardly be refurbished easily. No particular years, you can choose the car by its looking. If you want the triangular tail lamps, forget the facelift models post '92. '88 to '91 cars have Marelli ignition and they are more powerful than the Lucas cars pre '87, but I heard that Lucas cars are smoother. If you can adopt the smoked tail lamps '92-'93 cars (same as mine) would be a good choice. They are more reliable than pre facelift models, and less expensive than the colored bumper models post '94. If you want power, go for 6.0L post '94.
+blackvr4tt Yes, he also took my money and stop responding. I was lucky enough to get back the money, for I bought stuffs by credit card, I asked the card company to get it back for me. Unfortunately I don't know anybody who sells this kind of stuff. You will have to make one on your own. You will need 90 elbow silicone hoses, aluminum pipes, air filters, maf adapters, and some epoxy bonding like cold weld.
Thanks for the feedback - unfortunately I tried to buy the intakes from Brian Welker at V12 Performance but he took my money and wont respond. I saw another buyer was scammed also. I would tell anyone else to avoid him --- do you know anywhere else that makes a similar performance intake?? I looked at the ebay link you sent but the seller doesn't seem to have it. cheers
Yes, once a guy called Brian Welker at V12 performance was making a intake set for XJS V12, but he seems to have gone out of business(though the website is still active)Most people modify their own genuine intake//www.jag-lovers.org/xj-s/book/ColdAirIntake.html or install XJR-S version, which is sometimes listed on ebay but quite expansive. Mine is semi-custom intakes with a radiator upper panel of XJR-S, here you can see some pictures.//jaglover.web.fc2.com/XJS/XJS2/performance/performance.htmlThe intakes are bought from a ebay seller //www.ebay.com/sch/8ru/m.htmlBut air filter he would provide was a cone type one, so I changed the air filter for the engine not to suck in the hot air. Plus I had to put a hole in the pipe and buy silicone hoses to put the intakes on. I spent around $300 only for the intakes, I think.About the exhaust, I just removed the second cats. The other part is as the stock.
I don't have much money either, haha, so I bought a half-built kit on ebay.//www.ebay.com.au/itm/Jaguar-XJS-XJRS-V12-Stainless-Steel-Mesh-Cone-FIlter-Units-/400616201485?nma=true&si=vD7XrSJWk7hJreocvL2GrGjDz30%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557This seller once listed so called half-DIY kit, which has no holes on it and make it cheaper. So I asked him to avoid air filters and make it cheap further. I think I bought at the cost of approx £120. But as you see you can build on like this using aluminum pipes, 90 elbow silicone hoses, MAF adapter and universal air filters.Mine looks like this;//jaglover.web.fc2.com/XJS/XJS2/performance/performance.htmlI start thinking the diameter of the air intake pipe is too large, though, it sounds nice. These intakes and the exhaust pipes make my car thirst for fuel, so it revs up smoothly but it has got no significant power gain. I think I will need a fabricated ECU to make it much faster.
If i had the money I'd weld up some homemade "growler" intake but for now I just chopped the trumpers off a spare set of airboxes i had. Instead of the weird whirring sound the engine growls a bit once you get over 2k rpm. Anything noticeable in the power department as a result of the straight pipes?
Thanks, that's informative for me. My 92 had 2 cats in downpipes and 2 in the end of the intermediate pipes instead of mufflers, so in the end it will be just the same when you remove 2 cats & 2 mid mufflers. But I think the pre facelift models sounds sharper than the post facelift. The engine with the intake "JAGUAR" badge revs somehow dull, for the sake of fuel economy.
thats probably what it is. The rears seemed to be referred to as resonators and silencers. Usually because they added onto a system using a muffler and silence anything left over. I can see the british calling a muffler a silencer though and I have seen the substitute pipes titled that way just as you have. I was just confused and trying to pinpoint what exactly you had replaced to get this sound. My 88 has 4 cats and the intermediate and rear "mufflers" still, so i wanted to see what was really removed to produced this sound.
Oh, is there any difference between mufflers and silencers? I didn't think there was at least in British English... For those who sell this product call it "silencer substitute pipes" and this makes sense among the XJS maniacs. Anyways you're right, it has stock rear ends and straight through intermediate pipes.
the silencers are the part at the very back, the "intermediate pipe has mufflers. The silencers are a straight through design while the mufflers are baffled/chambered. So this exhaust is with the stock rear end of the exhaust and the intermediate(before the rear wheels) is straight pipe?
XJS has one each silencer on the intermediate pipes and the substitute pipe are the replacement for those silencers, not for what you see in the back of the car. Actually this post facelift car has two cats instead of silencers, but I cut them off and put on the pipes.
