That's a difficult one really, because I was in a different era, a
different time. The rules were so much stricter then. That style of racing,
what we called Stock Car tactics, were not allowed, and if you were
cautioned, or called to see the Clerk Of The Course, and it was Don Truman,
then watch out! In those days a Black Flag was used, rarely, and a heavy
fine followed it IF after an investigation you were found guilty. Today of
course, it really is ruled by TV isn't it. A great pity. I think
A family friend Vic Crapnell raced a Downton Mini Cooper S 1293 at Castle
Combe, mid to late 60s, I remember seeing Brian Cutting racing a 1900
Martin enginined Anglia, he was always below the lap record in practice,
Jonathan Buncombe and Richard Longman were always quick in Minis at the
time, and local car dealer Ron Fry would race a mini, then a Ferrari 250LM
in the sports car race, he later changed to Ford GT40s...Vince Woodman
raced too in a Lotus Cortina. Did you race at Combe at all?
That's a difficult one. I raced in a different time, a different era. Rules
were stricter then, and adhered to. If you were Black Flagged for
Ungentlemanly Conduct, that was considered pretty bad. In my solid twelve
years of motor sport, I rarely saw this type of stupidity. It was close as
you know, my mates, Gerry Marshall, Pete Baldwin, and the rest of the lads,
respected each other, and our cars, so, Stock Car tactics were not seen too
often. So, in my opinion, yes. Thanks. Gerry.
@2000gpg Further to my earlier reply, I never did race at Combe. This was
due to the Championships I was in were at most of the other circuits;
Brands/Mallory/Snetterton/Oulton/Silverstone, and so on, and so on. I raced
against Richard regularly, and also Jonathan on a weekly basis, both very
quick minis. Ron, I recall, but not as a fellow club racer.Brian, yes in my
earlier years, when I raced the big engined Anglias. Cheers! Gerry.
@gerryracer Hi Gerry, thanks for a lovely nostalgic trip back to my youth,
we had a great chat at Mallory yesterday and I hope that we will become
friends. Take a look at a couple of my videos and tell me where I am going
wrong, I know running into the back of Lotus Cortina's ha ha take care,
Richard Sprigg [email protected]
Thanks. I'm going again in a few weeks so I will. Yeah, I was going on The
Smiler again and I saw you and came to talk to you. I told you I was going
on it again and you said, "And they call me mad!" I waved to you on The
Smiler at the vertical lift hill. I'll say hi the next time I come.
YES! September 1964 Brands Hatch. He was driving an 1132 cc Mini (
Cooper"S"). I was in another mini. That was when I raced mini's for about
two years, before going Ford. I think we raced in the same races a few
times, but that sticks in my mind. Give him my regards please matey. Gerry.
Hi Guys, I am still alive and kicking, so if you want to chat about the old
pioneering days of Saloon Car Racing, just pop in and ask a question, or
make a comment ( as long as it's sensible) and I will do my best to answer.
Thanks for viewing. Gerry.
Don't forget to be at MALLORY PARK (United KIngdom) on July 20th 2014, when
the Special Saloons will be out racing again! I will be there, so please
come over and say Hi if you spot me. Cheers. Gerry.
Just popped in to see if anyone had left any comments. If you do happen to
come across this site, enjoy the photographs, and tell your friends. Thank
you. Be Lucky! Gerry Taylor. 17/04/2015.
Spoke to him today and he tells me he only raced Autocross. Love watching
old 70's racing on here, I used to own a Mk1 Mexico back in the early 90's
great cars.
I would be very interested in copies of any photos that you might have of
my dad as I would love to show my son, (his grandson) many thanks if you
can help
In-car footage from our Riley 1.5, taken during the 'Goldies but Oldies' race for 1950's saloon cars at the Brands Hatch Masters Festival. Other cars include ...
This has got to be the best track video I've ever seen. At 4:55 the Jag
should have reduced throttle and let the camera car pass. If you're not
addressing the turns properly it's safer to fall in behind. At 9:28 is a
fantastic move. Hitting that gearbox just right I say. Those Wolseley cars
are real class - Someone should remake those cars with modern materials in
a bi-turbo diesel AWD that can tow a jetski sized load. They would be a big
hit at $15k.
Thanks ! - no the cars are not standard - all run lighter and more bhp +
loads of extra go-faster goodies! They are considerably quicker than
standard - especially the A35s and A40s!
What a cracking video, the Riley 1.5s that I drove never went round corners
like that one.You were a bit daring overtaking the Jag, did you swap paint?
