So is this just a metering issue? I've just picked up a lucid - someone was chucking it away. But on mine channels 1-6 are doing a similar thing... the meters fluctuating around -26. Did you manage to fix it?

Hooking up ad/da convertors and clock to interface

A look a gear in a above average DAW.. We point out pieces of gear that have contributed to a lot of hit records in the last few decades.... this video in general ...

Do great Ad/Da converters affect what you hear or does it affect the actual recording when recorded through it?

+Doug Jenkins Thanks Doug!

+Gregory Carter IT actually effects both,, ad when recording or bouncing in pro tools, DA when listening to what it really is bouncing, it's that important to be able to hear what the song really sounds like...

Just to piggy-back what you've said here, for the benefit of the "newbies", word clock is required for all DIGITAL equipment in the studio. If you have more than one piece of digital equipment, it all must be slaved to ONE clock. So you MUST slave all digital equipment to whatever clock source you wish to use. You can't mix and match. Period. Analog gear, obviously, is exempt from these rules, but if it is a hybrid analog/digital piece of equipment you HAVE TO SLAVE IT. If you DO NOT have more than one piece of digital equipment (for most people the only piece of digital audio equipment they use is their interface...which is already generating clock) they don't technically need an external clock. Although the clock on a Digi 002/003 isn't really that good. Also, AES/EBU and S/PDIF are both digital audio protocols, except AES is BALANCED and SPDIF is UNBALANCED. So, for guys running S/PDIF, you do NOT want to run RCA cable more than 10 ft in distance (like with all unbalanced cable..more than 10 feet is a no-no because of noise). AES you can run as far as you want...but the further you run your cable the greater the latency--that's physics. Additionally, your cable for both SPDIF (RCA) and word clock (BNC) should be 75-ohms. That's very, very important. You shouldn't be using some random RCA or Comcast/Time Warner coax cable for your studio! It needs to be the proper impedance and quality to function properly. I recommend just buying it in bulk and making your own cable. Just thought I'd add my 2 cents.

+Eric Pederson I just finished a video explaining exactly what you mentioned here.  It's true a lot of people are confused, Good comment..

hey doug, appreciate all your videos been a big help. im opening up a new studio running pro tools hd native with a hd i/o 16x16 . im also gonna use a 2bus lt for summing. I figured out how to hook up the two but want to bring the monitor section out to my c24. do you know how I could do this ? I want to throw a big ben in the mix but am having trouble. if you can help with an idea id appreciate it. best of luck

+Benjamin Watson In this case, you would have to dedicate multiple outputs to your convertor in this setup.. 8 outs on a db25 directly to your c24.. I would recommend doing this through a patchbay though. So you don't eat up all your outputs if your not using them this way.. so let's say you buy a db25 patchbay, you could run everything into this, so you can use your outputs for multiple things.. then the big ben or external clock would just run directly to the convertor/ convertors for clocking ... I am going to do another video explaing this in depth..

yo man i rly need a tip from a guy like you. meaning a guy who knows all this crazy stuff. my goal: i wanna record just 1 track at a time. no more, but that 1 in the highest possible quality. so i figured: i get a lunchbox, maybe neve preamp, EQ, Comp, a good ADC. and boom. i am done. trueee? XD
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-XdUIqdMkCWA/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAAA/4252rscbv5M/photo.jpg?sz=64
u know twitch lets musicians stream now .. ?bet you could get some views just by answering all this stuff
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-XdUIqdMkCWA/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAAA/4252rscbv5M/photo.jpg?sz=64
do you beef up digital drumsamples by running them through  D/A  into EQ / COMP back into A/D ?is that a thing? or dumb lol
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-Jo1KEUArr9E/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAADQ/TkVfDiZYN84/photo.jpg?sz=64
+Captain Mike Meloni I would compress and eq after.. by running the piece of gear as a insert.. I do it on the way in, but make sure I don't hit it too hard.. creating a insert is running out and in the convertor creating a loop so you can use your hardware like a plugin.. that's a long explanation, I did a video on that somewhere
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-XdUIqdMkCWA/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAAA/4252rscbv5M/photo.jpg?sz=64
thank you alot.btw all of this is just to record rap vocals.would you advice me to compress& EQ rap vocals analog before it even hits the converter?i thought i just get comps, EQ, and preamp all 3 from neve.

Yes your missing a D/A that is for your speakers, you can capture the a/d through spdif or adat, but it's smart to buy a A/D-D/A convertor like a lynx aurora, or all kinds of options, a lot of companies are doing both in the same box now.. where back in the day, they would do them separate..  but you would need a D/A conversion to hear the results, and print back into the d.a.w or use spdif out to another interface..  how I didn't confuse you..  I used a rme 9652 pcie card, and ran stand alone with a symphony I/o and apogee rosetta 800 for years, sounded awesome.. the rme was the interface.. the rosetta was the convertor..  hope this helps.. or you can buy one with connectivity already, like a lynx aurora with usb or firewire built in.. or antelope audio, apogee .. things like this..

thxxx alot.1 last thing if you got the time..how do i get the A/D converter output,  into my sequencer?am i missing 1 more expensive thing?i hope not.i figure the signal is already digital in good quality, so i dont really want it altered anymore right?i googled it and i read "interface" or "pci card".i just need to know that at that point the quality doesnt matter anymore right? its just a matter of transporting the signal
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-Jo1KEUArr9E/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAADQ/TkVfDiZYN84/photo.jpg?sz=64
+Captain Mike Meloni Yes you are definitely thinking the right way.. 1 nice preamp, one nice convertor. it really is that simple.. You may need a DA though, so you can hear all that goodness and what it actually sounds like.. I think a lot of people would be further ahead with this attitude.. Then send it off to get mixed.. it does make a difference for sure.. the mixing is a whole new animal of routing, and not as simple of a process. more inputs and outputs, multiple pieces of gear running loops to process the sounds.. little more in depth.. But if you want to just make music, buying a neve pre, and recording one at a time is a good plan.. I have a guy I know with a lunchbox, that just constantly is buying new pres, shadow hills, neve, api, and he has some amazing recordings that I mix for him.. God bless, and great luck.. you caught me in the studio checking my youtube channel..

Hey Doug thanks for your videos, one question, does hooking up the converter via spidf completely bypass the converters on the interface?or is this something to set in your daw? Thanks in advance
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-XdUIqdMkCWA/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAAA/4252rscbv5M/photo.jpg?sz=64
+mrjoshua2141 also are you setting the source in protools to word or adat
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-XdUIqdMkCWA/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAAA/4252rscbv5M/photo.jpg?sz=64
+Doug Jenkins same with adat?
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-Jo1KEUArr9E/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAADQ/TkVfDiZYN84/photo.jpg?sz=64
+mrjoshua2141 It does bypass the convertor and uses the clock and convertor of whatever you are running spdif
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-aaE8xp4ULD4/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAADU/FSbodXiX7io/photo.jpg?sz=64
hey doug - not sure if this has been asked or mentioned in previous comments/threads but what would the chain on this be? would it go from computer - interface - converter - clock and then back through the interface to the computer? just trying to get a visual representation of of the chain of events work!
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-Jo1KEUArr9E/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAADQ/TkVfDiZYN84/photo.jpg?sz=64
+George Barlow Sorry for late response, the clock is built into the convertor, if external clock, it does not carry sound, just send clock signal to convertor.. The chain would be dependent on how you convertor is hooked up.. for example Lynx aurora usb,, the usb would transfer the conversion to the computer.. if you had a external clock, it would send a clock signal out, to the input of the convertor.. Let me try to hurry and make a video on this..
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-Jo1KEUArr9E/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAADQ/TkVfDiZYN84/photo.jpg?sz=64
not yet, this month I should have some time to get back into the videos, sorry for the wait
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-AB0XWiDd56Y/AAAAAAAAAAI/AAAAAAAAAJQ/TcT3J7YY_qc/photo.jpg?sz=64
+Doug Jenkins Did you make one yet? Its confusing not to know this, thanks

I will look to do a video on this, to explain it..
