10 Reasons Not to Worry (Too Much) About Malpractice Claims
10 Reasons Not to Worry (Too Much) About Malpractice Claims ...
Sarah: That's the end of Carol's words, which are definitely a call to
action & to inspiration to share our message with others! And I just want
to say, that, as someone who's been working on similar issues in Texas
(right on the Rio Grande, on the border), it's a real inspiration to know
what's going on here when you're down there.... So, when you think it
doesn't matter what you're doing up here, & you feel like a really small
group, know that that group exists all over the United States....
That's great, except paroled asylum seekers are not allowed to work
legally for many months, or even years, as they face one, two, or three
more years delay before their final hearing.... And while the U.S.
government spends more than $100 a day to hold an asylum seeker in
detention, it doesn't offer a dime of support for parolees! That condemns
these good people to prolonged dependence (or even indigence), which one
asylum seeker we know says is like being persecuted all over again!
We've commiserated with them as they've endured weeks, months, years
imprisoned, with no privacy, treated like criminals, & never seeing the
sun.... The January 2010 immigration detention reforms brought real hope
for a dignified reception of asylum seekers by our country: Homeland
Security promised to create facilities more appropriate than prisons for
people fleeing persecution & torture, & asking the United States to protect
them.... But what do we get? Delaney Hall!
Let's demand that the U.S. government allow asylum seekers to apply for
work authorization as soon as they have filed their asylum claim! And what
are the many detained asylum seekers who know no one in the United States
to do? Don't they deserve parole too? Volunteer groups in New York & New
Jersey have sponsored a few such asylum seekers & we've been blessed &
privileged to do so! But we are a small & fragile safety net!
At Delaney Hall, detainees have outdoor access, but the air is fouled by
the stink of the nearby waste sites - That is dangerous! That is not
dignified! That is not appropriate for anyone - not even for one day! One
more word about the January 2010 reforms: They have allowed many detained
asylum-seekers to get released to a sponsoring family or friend, so that
they can better document their asylum claims....
Carol Fouke-Mpoyo's Statement:: Hundreds of New York volunteers have
visited New Jersey immigration detention centers over the past 13 years
through Riverside Sojourners - based at the Riverside Church.... Working
closely with First Friends, we've sought to extend friendship & moral
support to asylum seekers & others with no one else to visit them....
Know that [our] group exists all over the United States.... and extending
to international partnerships.... And together we are building a movement
that will make a difference!
Community-based alternatives to detention work - at a fraction of the cost
of detention! Let's demand that the U.S. government fund community-based
alternatives to detention!
