6 ways to Mirror Polygons in Maya

I can so much agree with the Blender arugment here ... i can totally
understand DT Chris ... having to use an outside script just to get a so
essential function like mirroring properly done... is a real mystery to me
for an app with a price that high... Blender(free), in my oppinion, is far
superior than Maya in a lot of ways. Im no Maya hater, ill use it
frequently and I like lots of things about it...but the things that are
annoying ...are mainly in the essential parts, which is where you just dont
want to be annoyed. Autodesk should be ashamed. Latest example: they jus
added regular automatic seam baesed unwrapping first in 2014. And even that
only with the bonus tools. They had no decent up to date UV Mapping tools
until then.. I just dont get how blender is so widely voodoo
downgraded...even if its functionality is so much better and once you
learned it , faster and more intuitive. But yeah ... lets don start with
all that :) (too late i guess :)) As is said , im not hating , i have lots
of fun using maya ... but its this little annoying things in the essentiel
functions, and this "you have to use this or that script just for farting"
that gives me the creeps frequently. Mainly i think that it is not worht
its money cause of that.
+Harry Sanders Yeah mate I've hardly used Blender, but I've used XSI, 3ds Max, Mudbox, Zbrush and Lightwave all professionally, I know Mental Ray pretty good and I'm currently deep in Renderman and Substance Painter And need to get into VRay next. I've a rule I try not to complain about packages till I've used them for a year or so. Every package has a strength that the others don't. I remember switching from Lightwave back in 99 to Maya and expecting everything to be easy. I hated Maya at first. Little by little I picked up the tricks and now you'd never catch me going back. I've seen some nice stuff in Blender, cool ideas for sure. Mirroring for sure is evil in Maya. Fingers crossed they finally sort it. Good stuff.
+andrew silke Thanks for your interesting response! Your right, getting into software war isnt a good and useful thing...and as im writing this i have much fun modeling a gun in Maya right now using the duplicate special feature. And of course it is maybe a bit too far to say it isnt worth its money... cause there is definetly some hard work putten into this software, one can see that. Its jus so quick that you get overwealmed with negative aspects when you come from an other modeling software...especially with this basic things working weird or not working as you expect it all of the sudden..... and maybe...on second thought... if i had learnded maya first and then switched to blender ..then there would be a certain chance for me to get angry with blender on certain points as well. After all, both are software with wich you can achieve the same thigns ..and it all comes out to the art and personal skill at the end of the day. I guess its just those feelings i get since i learned maya for a few weeks now after swichtign from blender. And there are definitly also some things that relly depend on taste and preference...which is even less useful to argue about, cause no one forces anyone to use a certain program. Jus when it comes to Maya, its kind of a "have to know how to use it" , cause its industrie standard. That is maybe one more reason some people feel like i mentioned above. You concentrate a lot more on the weekness of a product you have to use, than of a product you want to use. Maybe its kind of an psychological effect. Ive started trying to get over the things which annoy me in Maya by keeping a neutral attitude towards it ...and blame the difficulties on myself for not bein good enough in using it Annoy-Free yet.
+Harry Sanders I've been speaking with the Autodesk guys about this. The problem is deep in Maya's architecture, and if we're making comparisons then yeah compare Blender (especially in other areas aside from modelling) then it's best not to get into software wars since the industry as a whole thinks that Maya is worth the money and there are reasons for that. Talk to true pros about Blender (especially those in pipelines) as I've done and you'll get some angry responses quickly. But unfortunately Maya just wasn't built with a lot of mirroring in mind in modelling. The integration of the Nex Toolkit (now the Toolkit) can remedy that... so it's coming so they say and it's been worked on. Apparently it's just not been easy, a real headache one of those things that's been a missing core part of Maya and you're correct to say it's been an obvious problem for everyone, and yes very late that it's 2015 and we're still waiting.
When I mirror objects across the center line, using any means, it seems the
normals get flipped. The object looks black. Like it is inside out. Any
advice?
in the viewport menu golighting > two sided lighting, that's a 2015 thing it's on by default in 2014. The mirror me script shouldn't have that problem I believe.
+andrew silke But dude, am I suposed to make a .txt file with the link you sent us?Or should I convert it to a .mel file or something? I can't figure this shit out! We are all noobs here, please help.
place the script in your maya2015x64/scripts folder in your preferences directory, restart maya and then map the following .mel code to a shelf or user hotkey.source mirrorMe.mel;mirrorMeRead;The UI can be accessed with source mirrorMe.mel;mirrorMeUI;

Not worth the money just do it the ol fashion way or buy an Intous. I
brought one and it was not worth all of that money. Don’t let it ever need
repairs they will use that to rob you some more with obscene prices. The
pros know it’s not necessary but they still want to lie… Don’t trust them!
BS... I just got one, and its worth every dollar, some people cant handle a 600 hp car, you cant handle a screen drawing tablet, nothing to be ashamed here..
