John Denver at the Australian Bicentennial in 1988
John performs at the Australian Bicentennial Celebration in 1988. Songs include: Sing Australia, For You, and Calypso. No copyright infringement intended.
It is interesting that others have also noticed Cassie's stony face during
this performance; it has always bothered me. In his book he says that they
had several fallings out during their courtship, with jealousy an issue.
When I read this it struck me as a portent of what was to come because if
you are fighting in those first couple of years when you are crazy in love,
it doesn't auger particularly well for the long term. And now I know this
it makes me wonder if they were having a bit of difficulty at the time of
this concert. He even says I have fallen in love "it seems" which strikes
me as less than a ringing endorsement. Lastly, the first time I ever heard
"For You" he was being interviewed on radio here in Australia. He didn't
sound particularly buoyant in the interview and when they played the song I
thought I could detect some melancholy in the song. His songs are usually
so upbeat and positive but this one sounds a bit sad. I absolutely love
the song but I think he may not have been feeling totally upbeat when he
wrote it. I don't deny for a moment that he loved Cassie but I don't think
their romance was an easy one and at some deep level it didn't seem to meet
his needs.
I have spent my life as a songwriter probably inspired by Sir John (my
designation) writing songs for meaningful places I've been. John Denver was
such a musical bard of touching many beautiful, interesting and needing to
better understand and be preserved the essence of the places he visited and
felt a connection. If one of my songs came close to that artist natural
meaningful location I will be ever in debt to his gift to teach us how to
do it......better and with love and grace.
