'Academically Adrift' Students are not learning because they don't read.
If the purpose of a college education is for students to learn, academe is failing, according to Academically Adrift: Limited Learning on College Campuses, ...
I suppose my style of language learning is mostly independent, but I still
wish to share just to share, and I am curious about how you and others feel
about my method. I am studying Chinese, and mostly what I do is chat with
native speakers. I look up words I don't know, and try to make note of
them. I also study at university, but I agree that my time spent
conversing, at my pace, with native speakers is much more valuable, but
having a teacher explain certain grammar points has been necessary
why don't they read more? Maybe they can't read very well or read quickly?
Maybe they're not native English speakers? You can be a good test taker and
pass the entrance exams without being knowledgeable about the subject.
Multiple choice tests can be easy for some because they know how to
approach them. I found an excellent youtube site called the Logic of
English, sounds oxymoronic, but, I learned alot about English there. I
really think many cannot read; the rules of English are not taught.
that study is a load of crap in my opinion, they used the same kind of
bullshit standardized testing they do in high school which involves skills
that are not specifically developed in college (math, reading
comprehension, writing) and didnt test them on anything related to their
major. ive been in school less than a year and i feel ive already learned
so much, my entire perspective and understanding of life has changed. but i
doubt id score any better on any test than i wouldve last year ;P
I am not a fan of group studying either (Japanese+History student). I get
much more done studying alone than when I am distracted by others. At
university, students are responsible for their own education, and young
people nowadays are just, well, lazy. My generation doesn't have to work as
hard to get by everyday as people 80 years ago did. People really should
study more at university, though, as they are receiving copious amounts of
taxpayer funds so that they can get an education.
This was a very interesting video. College was useless, and almost all of
the recent grads that I know in the US are now working in restaurants and
other menial jobs. But unfortunately, I think that most people do not
read/learn unless there's an immediate benefit to this learning, which
college can simulate but real life cannot. It's part of the larger culture
of immaturely and irresponsibility that has cultivated this attitude, and
sadly I can't see it changing any time soon.
@Iceland1944 Well think it would interest you to know that I am a twelve
year old American who is learning German and French Herr Iceland1943. On my
own. Ich kann ein gut biss Deutsch sprechen. Mein Deutsch ist sehr besser
als mein Franzosisch. Es tut mir leid denn Ich kein umlaut haben. Ich habe
ein problem mit Rechtschreibung. Wo unterrich Sie, was tun Sie unterrich.
Corrections welcome I hope you speak German I thought you did because you
said Herr Kaufman.
I would beg to differ with you on your statement about Yale. I don't know
when you went to Yale, but I know of people who went there and other elite
schools. My understanding it is very hard, if not impossible to 'fail out'.
They will not kick you out of the University for failing per se... many
more people drop out on their own volition for a variety of reasons. The
same is true whether you are talking about Yale Law school or medical
school.
in university, my lectures consisted of my lecturer basically reading out
notes which we were able to get via the internet anyway. so, i ditched the
lectures and just spent the time learning the notes instead of having
someone read them to me. turned out to be a far better use of my time. for
language learning, reading basic texts and then working your way up is
key.i dislike the way language teachers try to drill grammar & rules into
students.
I went to study humanities (and haven't even finished yet when I should
almost 2 years ago) myself because I'm completely retarded at math which is
the backbone of any exact science with I would like to study, but can't
because there's isn't any special programs that will bother with tards like
me and teach the whole high school math again, just in case I might get it
this time. I really don't see how can I do it independently.
All I ever wanted to do was learn. I never felt that was happening at my
college (I only was able to go to community college of course). To this day
I wonder what a real school would have held for me had I had the money to
go. Of course, a couple of my wealthy friends didn't seem to learn much of
anything in their schools. Thanks for this wise video.
Universities are basically just special zoological parks designed for such
fauna as should choose to dwell there. Those who choose can come and visit
me in my cage. Much can also be said for autodidacts. Autodidacts are the
ones who do things. Most people who rely on what is imparted in the
classroom remain at the larval stage.
Young people are no longer intellectually curious. Some are, but most are
not. I am a teacher, so I know. They don't understand how anything is
important if it's not music, a video game, smoking hash, getting drunk, or
something on their smart phone. Many do not even come to school with a pen
or paper...if they come to school.
Yeah, it's true about young people, Herr Kaufmann. There are exceptions,
but even the exceptions are mediocre most of the time. I have not had one
student in my 13 years of teaching who has been really fired up to learn a
language. They just don't care. I spelled your name the German way, I hope
you don't mind.
@alkantre I agree autodidacts often are the ones who do things. As a
society we need to become open to alternative models of knowledge
acquisition. I invite you to join a movement to expose the problems with
today's colleges. Type Reform Higher Education Now in the search box on
Facebook
Sometimes learning in groups is useful when it comes to maths, engineering,
etc. This type of knowledge usually requires a problem solving aproach, and
it's good to share differents ways to solve the same problem. However, it's
also very important individual effort.
if you want real learning go to the Library!!! just sit in the library for
five hour and see how much you will learn in one day!! I assure you, you
will have learned almost a quarter more than what you would have learned if
you sat in a 1 hour passive lecture!!!
I agree. It was actually learning languages that taught me that you learn
well when you study on your own. For many subjects, it is actually very to
be taught well by another person. You have to take responsiblilty for your
own knowledge.
Students at all levels should be required to read a certain amount of books
and tested on that alone. Reading, even sci-fi novels, simply makes people
smarter. So many people lack exposure to their own native language.
I actually go to University of Chicago and I pretty much agree with
everything you've said. I'm only here because I want the paper at the end.
Most days I skip class to study on my own and write.
@lingosteve Ok. I don't know about Canadian Universities but I have heard
many stories of people dropping out of American Universities but never
being kicked out unless they were caught cheating.
@lawsonfulton But didn't he say in the video he was referring to humanities
and not science or math? Or was he talking about something else when said
that? I can't remember..
@Haseeb2 funnily strange, when I first listened, I also thought I heard
"Yale". However it's "McGill" without mistakes if you listen to it again
carefully.
Hey, a kindred spirit. Good for you. Just keep pursuing knowledge rather
than waiting for someone to give it to you!
What not to FORGET to bring to college ! Dorm necessities !
Hey loves thanks for watching my video! Don't forget to follow me on instagram and Twitter: Prettylivi1 You can reach me in College at : Olivia Jenice Olverson ...
