Reply 2) You have to take a view on when is the right place for NR in the
chain. Normally you should apply NR before anything but if the noise is
hard for the plugin to clean, eq'ing it in that area to expose the noise or
reduce the noise might help quieten the part. I sometimes apply comp before
noise to highlight the problems in the quite parts. If you use any of these
ensure you keep it to a minimum otherwise the audio is impossible to get
right as there are just too many things going on.
Reply 1) Hi, I don't have 6 but I would assume NR will not be that good if
it did have one. Wave noise x 'learns' the noise floor on the bit of audio
you choose. If you have FCX it has one with variable results. Most others
just provide a blanket noise reduction which in my opinion sometimes is
better without all together. Best is to ensure that the detail of the
dialogue in not worse because of NR or that the audio sounds strange when
applied. .....continued in message 2)
Thanks Rob - very useful video. If you don;t have the Waves suite, what do
you recommend for noise reduction in Cubase 6? Does it come with a built-in
one. Failing that is it okay to do all the EQ, comp etc, and then export
into Audacity to removal noise (or is it essential noise is reduced *prior*
to EQ etc? Also, do you ever apply any reverb for voiceovers?
Reply 3) In your case I would export clean into Audacity, fix noise and
export out to Cubase to finalise with EQ etc. In most cases I dont apply
any reverb. In fact the opposite. If I was doing a role play voice of
someone in a space then yes but for commentary dry is best. Goodluck!
THANK YOU! THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!! You are an angel. You
clearly and concisely gave me exactly the information I was after. I have
been searching forever for a clear, basic explanation of how to polish a
voice over recording. Keep on rockin'. :)
It's difficult to me to find a way to get the great expanded voice over EQ
and processing, used to create movie trailers ful lof the correct warm
sound and spatial distribution.
Yup looks perfectly good for your application. Remember to record a natural
sound and apply EQ later to make it sound flattering as I have described on
the blog. Good luck
