this looks interesting, whats the progress, any vids of test runs?
Would You Buy a 1926 Ford Roadster with a Miata 1.8L Engine?
No, this isn't the famous Bo Jones Modified. It's a tribute car inspired by it that's just as cool and packs a surprise under the hood. Roy Rockwell built this custom ...
DIY spark plug thread repair Miata BP
Ever wondered what to do when a spark plug keeps jumping out of your engine's head? Well we had to fix that problem that showed up with the MX-5.
+Latres Singleton For what its worth, I have not had a single hiccup after more than a year. So I can say this is the 'right way' to fix the problem. A machine shop would have to thread in a helicoil or re-sleeve the hole similar to this anyway.
It has only been a couple of weeks & a couple hundred miles, but this is the best it has run for a while. I had an intermittent ticking in the head which I thought was a dirty hydraulic lifter arm under the bucket (common for the BP motors). I even replaced the oring on the cam angle sensor and the valve cover gasket, checked the plug torque & wires and drove it for ~800 miles. Suddenly the plug threads for #4 quit and I was driving chitty chitty bang bang. So I decided to try the repair rather than a Craigslist head. The plug threaded in so well and is so snug now, that I would not hesitate to repeat this repair elsewhere. I used to walk right by these quick fix products and think "snake oil". I now stand behind how high a quality product the repair really is. This is exactly why we started making vids. Win, lose or draw hopefully someone can benefit from what we learn in the various projects.

1994 Miata Engine in 1966 Datsun Roadster
I accidentally started my swapped engine today, so I guess it works. The engine is a 1.8L from a 1994 Mazda Miata. The vehicle is a 1966 Datsun Roadster.
That's a great swap! The Mazda EFI looks really tough hehe. I have my dads
old 1968 (titled in 69) 1600 SPL311-20009. I had the evil idea of putting a
3 rotor RX7 motor in it. I had a RX3 wagon years ago and loved that engine.
I did extensive work on it and got to know the tricks of the rotary. - -
Lately I've been looking into making it electric. With and on-board genny I
could go places. lol - I remember a TV spot where a fella had a Perkins
diesel gen-set on an electric car and got 200 MPG!
I had a custom driveshaft made that had the Miata splines at one end and
the Datsun bolt pad at the other. It was inexpensive and better balanced
than stock. I did all the fabrication with a hacksaw and a drill press.
Check out my website (listed in the info section) for a complete how-to.
@jareddickey87 - Thanks for the compliment! The only web presence I have
for the build is my personal site, which is basically a how-to for doing
this swap. YouTube won't let me put the address in a comment, but you can
find it above in the description if you haven't already.
@Furryloveshentai - If I were to do this again, I'd use the 1.6L engine.
The swap would have been so much cheaper and easier (the 1.6L cars are all
over auto salvage yards; the 1.8L cars are not) and then I'd totally turbo
it, just for fun.
I am incredibly impressed with your build! Do you have a cardomain for it
or anything of the like? I like the BP engine platform. Had one in my
Escort GT (91), and those engines are surprisingly potent and require very
little to modify.
the link you give is now broken. i have a datsun 1600 and evaluating the
possibility of putting in a miata motor so i would be very interested in
seeing documentation of your swap if it is still available. thanks!
Hello, I am in possession of a Datsun fairlady. I would also build in a
mazda motor. I see that with you well worked. Have you for tips and or
photos of the project. With friendly regards, Wim van Beelen
The SR20DE(T) is a great engine for the Roadster, but I'd need to cut the
car to put one in, and I didn't want to do that. Perhaps Miatas suck, but
the Miata drivetrain is extremely far from sucking.
The SR20 is a great swap, but involves frame modification. I like that the
Miata swap is essentially a drop-in, with no cuts to the car, completely
reversible in about an hour.
I love the K-series. If I could have afforded the K and the tranny from an
S2000... a number of 510 guys have done it & it's *sweet*. Best of luck in
your (ambitious!) build.
Did the transmission and driveshaft bolt on directly to the stock roadster
rear differential? How much fabrication was involved in this swap I want to
do the same one
