I ended up replacing the tranny. Found out it was the gear mesh that had gone bad. They can be replaced but I found that it was cheaper and easier to just find a used transmission and replace it.

1990-93 1.6 differential are known to go out at random times. time to upgrade to a torsen =]

Happens mostly in 2nd & 3rd gear.
