+Aaron Kellar Sure. My dad went to residential school when he was a child. He never talked about it and I never had the courage to ask. He has always had a silent rage and is an ex alcoholic which no doubt stems from these schools. I don't receive benefits because I am inuit status on my mom's side. The government never really bothered the Inuit in the north, so we don't really receive benefits. My dad has a college degree in social psychology, owns his own house and 2 vehicles, and has paid off his student loan. He is debt free and has a few years until retirement. Not many residential school survivors are lucky to be able to pull themselves out of whatever problems they have/are facing.When I was a kid, our class when on a cultural camp trip and this teenage girl told me about how her father would rape her. Nobody is born a rapist, it is a byproduct of abuse and dysfunction, undoubtedly from her father's early life; e.i. residential school.None of us "earn" benefits, and that is a very narrow minded way to look at it. The government has deemed it appropriate to try and repay us for taking over our land in mostly shady ways. You really should just read up on this stuff because you are highly misinformed.

I would suggest you google "residential schools" and read up on what actually happened in those schools. Maybe then you could start to understand. Imagine when you were 5 years old, you're taken from your parents, given the same haircut that every other kid has, and told not to speak English, and if you do speak English, you get beaten. Maybe they pull out your tongue and pinch it as hard as they can, maybe you get locked in the basement in pitch darkness for 3, 4, hell maybe the entire day. You do something the teacher doesn't like? WHACK! you get hit on the side of the head with a cane or they hold you by your hand and whack you all over your body with a belt. You wake up the next morning and told to take a shower, meanwhile the 'teacher' says he is going to "teach" you how to wash your privates, and he "washes" your privates for you every day. There are beatings every day. You're molested everyday, all the while being told that your family's heritage is wrong, gross and stupid. You've grown up to feel as though your people and you in particular are an inferior people.Now you're 16, you finally head home but you no longer understand English so you don't understand your parents or anyone else in your tiny village. You don't understand the customs and culture of your people. You try to get a job in the closest town. On your way to answer a 'Help Wanted' ad, you get called "dirty English speaker" (I don't know your nationality but I'm sure there is a terrible racial slur for it), maybe a group of people throw something at you as well. Now you get to an interview to stock shelves and told to leave because 'we don't want your kind here'.Now you're depressed, but it's 1915, so doctors have no idea what depression is and wouldn't really want to help you anyway. So you drink because it helps. The more you drink the better you think you feel. Now you've become a raving drunk who scare your children with unpredictable rage. Your children feel they have to walk on egg shells, and even then it doesn't really help, because they'll still get in trouble for reasons not even yourself understand. Maybe one night you decide to molest your daughter because you're drunk, or maybe one of your drinking friends decide to rape her.Now your children have grown up with these feelings of not being worthy of their parents(you) love. Feeling as though they are the cause of their parents(you) rage. What do they do? They turn to a myriad of addictions; overeating, drinking, smoking. They are filled with rage or self loathing and they don't understand why. Maybe some of their friends commit suicide or die drinking. Maybe they molest their children. All the while you have random people in your life, at the mall, walking down the street, telling them they are dirty, savages, or pieces of shit in direct or indirect ways.All the while, the whole thing is swept under the carpet by the majority of your country.Now, the children of your children are the majority of the current generation. They have, in an indirect way, experienced the horrors of residential schools. The kinds of stuff that happened there don't just affect the people who attended those schools, they affect generations of people. Hindsight is 20/20 and it's easy to judge people and point out what you think they are doing wrong, but unless you've lived it, you will never understand. The level of dysfunction brought upon my people isn't something anyone from anywhere can just "get over". Did you know that the last residential school was closed in 1996? 19 years ago. Do you know how insane that sounds? In my lifetime (and assuming yours), there was a place, where 100s of thousands of children where taken from their families and abused, was still standing. 12 years later, the government finally admits they were wrong in doing this. 12 years.This whole scenario is extreme but most of us Aboriginal people have experienced it in some way.I'm not going to get in a pissing match between us and what the Nazis did to the Jewish people because I'm not retarded.
