Ajahn Sumedho - Kamma And Rebirth
Luang Por Ajahn Sumedho (Thai: อาจารย์สุเมโธ) (born Robert Kan Jackman, July 27, 1934, Seattle) is the senior Western representative of the Thai forest ...
Brian, Ajahn Sumedho explicitly rejects the interpretation of rebirth as
reincarnation or transmigration of the soul, at the very beginning of the
video. He calls that a "Hindu doctrine". I have read Rahula who is, I
believe, an authoritative interpreter of the Theravada tradition in the
20th century and he also insists that annata excludes reincarnation.
Moreover he quotes the Buddha as saying that "all dhammas are non-self"
which is much wider term than "skandhas", excluding thus even the idea of a
'big' or 'cosmical' self as opposed to an individual soul.
Ajahn Sumedho avoids talking directly about rebirth in this talk. I
listened to all of it. I lived with him at his Amaravati Monastery in 2004
and there, Venerable Gaveseko told me "You can't teach karma and rebirth in
Western Europe." To put aside reincarnation confuses people more, I feel,
because it implies he can put aside rebirth too. I think Ajahn Sumedho
avoids talking about rebirth so as to not offend people who don't believe
it. But it is the over arching view of reality in Buddhism. I teach it all
the time on my 300+ You Tube videos.
I think this is a very nice talk of His Venerable Sir. But is it true that
rebirth is just superstition, I'm afraid I am not going to believe that.
Teaching does tell me otherwise, other teachers of the Theravada tradition
did tell otherwise. I did have to say that, for the benefit of other people
in the audience, so for them to see that apparently there are other views
on this topic than the one heard here, and they are not alone in believing.
End of my roar and may all beings be at ease :-)
reincarnation is always happening, even at this moment. that results from
impermanence. kamma is always influencing us. so i am afraid we cannot cut
the notion of reincarnation from the teaching of buddha. if we try to cut
it off, the other important organs also stop working.
The doctrine of annata is the cornerstone of Buddhism. Reincarnation
assumes that there is Atman, or self, or soul which only 'transmigrates'
from one life to another. Reincarnation is inconsistent with annata, so
reincarnation is inconsistent with Buddhism.
Ajahn Sumedho is certainly wary of reincarnation. I guess the teaching of
annata prohibits the possibility of reincarnation. One thing's for sure, at
the dawn of death we're all going to find out what happens!

LMAO!....LOL. I'm just rolling over and laughing at your reactions to what
you had to go through in those first 4 years as a monk. I've always
imagined people who wanted to be monks were super duper "saintly" human
beings. I never imagined them to be worldly, normal folks like me, full of
themselves, manipulative, and self serving individuals. Your stories about
those bothersome mosquitos, the ugly wall you helped build, the brooms you
had to make yourself from branches, not running water or electricity,
living primitively are precious. I particularly liked the story of how you
wanted to live alone for awhile, and how you thought it would be cool to be
alone and by yourself, and how Ajahn Chah kept saying no, then he finally
relented and let you go off for six months alone. And then you said it was
the worse six months of your life. I busted out laughing. Yup, I can
relate. Thank you Ven. Sir. Sadhu 3X.
An absolutely fascinating Dhamma talk by the leading disciple of Ajahn
Chah. I strongly advise you start with this talk if you have any interest
in the Thai Forest Tradition, Ajahn Chah himself, profoundly meaningful
Theravada Buddhism, and also the wonderful people of Issan; with whom I am
very grateful to be related.
