Cats' swimming ability is not a discovery. Instinct makes them swim in
order to avoid drowning. They are trying to get the hell out. The paddling
is nothing more than walking motions. Worse, if they are consistently being
thrown in, they are regularly ingesting the pool chemicals, namely
chlorine, since they must lick themselves dry. Good that they are taught to
avoid drowning in a home with a pool, but unless a cat is voluntarily
jumping in, safe to say, it's only the human that's amused.

I have an inground pool. My experience is... ALL animals can swim. It's a
matter of do they NEED to. My cat rolled into the pool today, took her less
time to get out than it did to get in, lol, but she swam. I've rescued a
lot of swimming critters.... baby bunny rabbits, 3 baby skunks, chipmunks,
squirrels, toads and snakes. Those of them that drowned just died of
exhaustion because they fell in before I discovered them. Oh, and for what
it's worth? Baby skunks don't spray. They fart.

I have a cat who sticks her paw in when I'm taking a shower then takes it
out, shakes it off and sticks it in again. But I would still never stick
her in water. She gets brushed every other day and wiped down with allerpet
wipes twice a week (the wipes are due to allergy). I adopted her from my
local humane society a few months ago (she's 3 yrs. old) and she's siberian
forest cat with some main coon. She greets me at the door every day when I
come home from anywhere.

Please don't throw cats into swimming pools and say, aw, how cute.. All
cats can swim and there are a couple of breeds, including Bengals, that
enjoy water. There are even exceptions within breeds where you find a cat
simply enjoys water. Your comment does not add any depth to my original
comment. Even a Turkish Van or Bengal cat would have to lick the chlorine
off of its fur. That's simply and obviously toxic.

You should know that cats CAN swim but don't like to! That aside, if you
find a cat that does like to swim and you notice it meticulously cleans
itself after, please dry it off yourself. Pools have chlorine which sticks
to the fur. It is not safe to ingest chlorine. For any living creature.
Same reason you don't use regular hair dye on cats' fur or wash them with
human shampoos. Thumbs up for cat safety

its pretty impressive though since those cats never ever swim, they aren't
built like tigers who have adapted to swimming, cats are just a very
evolved animal, they can survive the harshest shit imaginable, lions can
even swim if they have to and they despise the water, lol but us pathetic
humans have to actually learn how to swim, sad

I've went away for 2 days and had a friend who she comes over a lot come in
and take care of her. (food, water, litter box scooping and attention). My
cat didn't greet her at the door. She came after a minute for attention and
food. Although my cat didn't greet her at the door. So who's to say cats
aren't smart? I beg to differ.

I don't think a little Chlorine is gonna kill the cat. I mean I bet most
swimmers ingest a higher chlorine to body weight ratio that those cats.
Besides, it looks like once the cat lost its fear of water, it actually
enjoys the swimming. Look at him go!

-lactation w/ suckling instinct -male external gonad is adapted to also
urinate. -cochlea in inner ear -and of course EVERYSINGLE MAMMAL, except
some primates, can ultimately swim.

Of COURSE they can swim, duh! They run away, it's not like they WANT to go
back in. Some people never saw a cat swim before? Seriously? If they fall
in the water, they instinctively swim out. This is NOT a new concept, good

Ofcourse cats can swim, every animal know how to swim exept primates.
Usualy cats don't like to swim, but all can are able to swim whan they have
to swim. The only cat who likes to swim is a Turkish Van Cat.

instinct. Humans are the only ones who need to be taught, unless there only
