How To Load Test An Alternator | Power Probe 3 + GM 1 Wire 100 amp
This is how I am load testing my alternator in a practical sense. Using the power probe 3, I am able to precisely measure the output at any given idle or RPM ...
Great video Brian. You are getting the crash course on all this stuff!
Your voltages look good, but you may wish to measure your amperage output
at idle as well. Those alternators are advertised as 100-amp but they fudge
the numbers a little. Usually that's maximum amperage....at idle it'll be
more around 75-80 amps. 10si alternators were superceded by 12si and then
CS130 alternators as a few years went by because the 10si was simply at
it's maximum ability. These were/are Delco GM alternators BTW.
Not saying that's a bad thing or you chose a bad alternator, but you do
want to think about your power load at idle. You know that electric fans
temporarily draw a lot more amperage at startup than when running so that
could have cooked your fan controller(it shouldn't have).
Are you running an underdrive crank pulley? Back when I exclusively drove
5.0L Mustangs, anytime we had underdrive pullies on, you could watch the
voltmeter drop down to 12v anytime the engine idled. Looking back on it 20
years later I wouldn't use them again.
Working it at 100% capacity is probably what made the old one go bad so
fast. Go 3G 130A, you'll never go back haha. I've used mine for 2 years now
and love it, no worrying about having enough alternator and only $75 bucks
on Ebay plus a $15 kit to put it on. And you don't have brightening/dimming
lights at night.
Hello, that's a great video you made, but i have a question. I have a power
probe and i want to know how did you connect the power probe to do this
test? Thank you
So I had this 1997 Pontiac Sunfire given to me and had been previously sitting for 2+ years. The Alternator was seized, but managed to get it free. After some ...
