5 Things to Consider BEFORE DIY Car Repairs ~ Podcast Episode 93
If you are thinking about taking on a DIY car repair, there are some things you should consider. As a master tech, I am all for DIY car repairs, just be sure you are ...
#4 is a good point and why I started doing most of my own vehicle work (no
engine or transmission rebuilds yet, but hopefully in the future). After
getting ripped off on a strut replacement, I looked up how it was done and
figured I could have done it myself. Next car I got I actually did do it
myself and saved about $800. My front disc brakes also had to be done and I
looked up some videos on how that was done and again saved $600 or so by
doing it myself.
Nice channel by the way, good quality videos; you definitely deserve more
viewers. I just found your channel today from your collab video with
Engineering Explained
I just want to say I love your podcasts. I think simple DIY projects like
oil, filters, fluids etc should definitely be taught because it makes
people more educated and people will be able to understand what you are
saying to them, making your job alittle easier.
+HumbleMechanic I really appreciate your videos, i am about this close ( | |) to buying a new VW. However I just wanted to highlight that it's difficult to find a shop/mechanic that you can trust. I have paid over $1100 for a timiing belt job on a toyota 4runner, pulled off with the truck and noticed that smoke started spewing from under the hood. The problem: Tech did not tighten the coolant hose clamps :(. I took it back and they tightened the hose clamps... but the engine overheated and cracked a head they were unwilling to repair. From then on i have swore to never be so trusting of shops/mechanics. I took the Toyota to a toyota dealership because I wanted it done right, but they obviously rushed it and botched up the job. I had a SAAB 9-3 ... similar issue. Had a tech actually put a tear in one of the CV boots and disconnect vaccum lines so he can try and bring me back for more revenue. I wouldn't have cared to pay $1150 for a timing belt job so long as the work was performed correctly... however I think that unless my new VW comes with a maintenance plan I will be doing all my own maintenance. I have done engine swaps on my own in the past (240sx SR20 swaps, Honda B series swaps e.t.c.) and I just don't feel like most shops give your vehicle the time and attention that your money pays for. Been burned one two many times by shops.
lol, the last two times I gave the VW dealership the opportunity to work on
my cars it took them almost two weeks and they screwed up both cars! first
car they did some head work on, a week latter got a call from the mechanic
asking if the car was still running good (wtf to that ) month later the
head gasket blew, took a peek and it was missing a head bolt, yay. second
time was warranty work on a scattered transmission, got the car back,
started noticing it was steering hard, took a look under the hood and the
car was critically low on all fluids except engine oil. luckily for me I'm
a mechanic so I don't have to put up with others incompetence if i don't
want to, and I'm a firm believer that if you operate a machine you should
know how it works, even if you don't want to do the work yourself you
should still know how so you wont get taken for a ride by loosers.
Hi Charles do a video of the hybrid transmission and the 1.4 l engine that
you had on the engine stand a while back I know that the the 1.4 engine
will be the new base engine .
+HumbleMechanic helpI have a 2004 350z that runs great and is paid off. I'm getting body rust, what should I do? should I get it fixed or should I trade it in for a newer car?
