MR300D Pass 1 om606, Engine Cover Mold
Second attempt at making a mold. First one was for a custom throttle position sensor mount and this one was for an om606 engine cover. Great learning lessons ...
Use chopped fiber, it will help get in the corners. Also sounds like you
mixed a little hot. Slow setup would help you too. Also use way more gel
coat, and wax the piss out of your part. Tooling gel is what I use when
making molds.
+Rodney's w123 I prefer the chopped fiber mats. They're stuff until you wet them with resin, the acetate in th resin eats the bonding agent used to make it a mat. Also you'll have better luck making a thicker first layer. the thicker the resin is the better it sets up, and less likely for it to seperate between layers of glass. Since you're overlaying without bagging keep a bristle paint brush on hand to poke out any air bubles, and even those aren't a huge deal since this is just a mold. I prefer a 1" brush. Are you anchoring the cover in any way before your trying to mold it?
You are exactly right on all of your points. I made a second one with chopped mat a few days later and it turned out better but my (tooling) gel coat layer was still way too thin. Being the novice that I am I think I just need a little more practice :)
