RLS Intercooler versus OEM Lotus Exige S intercooler
RLS Intercooler Mk III (patents pending) versus OEM Lotus Exige S intercooler. Two identical 1875 watt hairdryers are used to force 190 degree F air through the ...
Additional experimentation with passing air through the IC while using the
hairdryers would yield more realistic results. The OEM may allow air to
pass more efficiently across the fins (through the rood scoop) than the RLS
and then the outlet temperature would be less. The wider RLS may not flow
as well as the narrower OEM especially if the roof scoop is not supplying
enough air volume.
Good experiment, but it is not realistic.
That test setup mostly measures the thermal mass of the two intercoolers.
To measure the steady-state effectiveness you would need to run the
hairdryers to steady state readings and probably with a bit of wind going
sideways through the intercoolers.. There will be more than 1850W of heat
generated by the supercharger. It probably does show that the heat would
soak in (and out), slower with the thermally-heavier intercooler.
The greater volume, lower flow restriction, and greater cross sectional
area also contribute to the better performance (those factors are not
explored in this experiment.)
