Originally John's father is irrelevant because it could have been anyone, in the beginning of the film Sarah was already dating someone who cancelled their date.So Sarah went to that club where she meets Reese and the Terminator. But before hand 2 Srash Connors were killed and she hears about it. Those murders cause the new timeline to occur. Her boyfriend cancelled their date, and possibly missed conceiving John in that 24 hour period. Luckily Reese was there instead to father John in the new timeline.
