Ford AOD transmission throttle valve bushing check
I checked my 1989 Lincoln, and 1991 and 1990 Grand Marquis. The Lincoln's throttle valve cable was attached and looked in good shape, but I'm not 100% ...
This shift timing getting weird is another result. The trans thinks there's
no load on it because the line pressure remaining down, so it starts having
slipping, early shifts. The C4/C6/FMX use vacuum modulator that controls
shift TIMING only. If the line comes off, or gets a hole, the weaker vacuum
signal makes the transmission think the accelerator is opened much farther
than it actually is, causing very late, or no upshifts. They won't burn up
because of it.
i have a twin to your silver 90 merc and my cable fell off and lost
pressure to the tranny...i went to the local ford dealer and got the
parts..it cost me $2.36 to fix it and in the parts bag it actually came
with 2 bushing's...[DO NOT DRIVE YOUR CAR WITH OUT THIS CABLE BEING HOOKED
UP] unless you want to burn the clutches out of your tranny and feel like
replacing your tranny over a 2 dollar part and 3 minutes to install
Your 78 Marquis defenentlly has the C6 known back then as the
"Cruise-O-matic" transmission. I do recall a friend of mine saying
something about the number 1 cause of failure on AOD transmissions being
related to a TV cable he called it, and I guess that would be the Throttle
Valve cable breaking off, or not adjusted right. So thanks to your vid, the
last piece of the puzzle has been put together :)
loved this vid it was very helpful i just purchased a 91 MGM GS and dont
have much experience with the 5.0 or its quirks. i had read a little about
changing the bushing but not much was explained or shown, needless to say
after watching i scurried out to "Foxy Brown" lol an checked only to find
no bushing and a zip tie :( so now im gonna find one any help or tips would
rock :) thanks guys
What's fatal about the throttle valve cable coming loose, is that the
transmission hydraulic pressure is directly controlled by the cable's
position. So, more throttle means more cable pull and more "line" pressure.
If it comes off, line pressure goes way down, too low to keep the clutches
firmly together. Then, under load they slip and burn up, and then no more
movement.
I think that AOD uses the same TV type system as the GM 700-R4. The
Throttle Valve cable is crucial on those, if it's not adjusted right it'll
burn up the transmission. On the maroon Grand Marquis, that mechanic you
took it to was an incompetent. You could get a new 302, or put in a stroker
347 with MAP fuel system for a fun sleeper.
I just realized those are Grand Marquis Front seats cuz the controls are on
the seat & the Lincoln controls are on the door, & I had to put ziptie
spacers on my 88 Linc tranny kick-down cables because it was shifting too
low at every position that I had the throttle.
It looks like you need a bit more weight to push the floor down. That
little hammer is not going to do much. Try dropping a large river rock on
the floor with the seat moved back, and the steering wheel tilted up. A
concrete block might work too.
Chad, you can refer to the data sticker on the driver side door to confirm
what trans the '78 Marquis has. In the space labeled TR will be a letter or
number. Just find that and decode it on the internet.
I just replaced this part in mine yesterday. The old plastic one was so
hard to get out it would have lasted many more years but at least now I
have peace of mind.
I'm going to check on my throttle vale & cable on my '89 Country Squire,
just to be safe. Thanks for the info.
Ford AOD TV Bushing
Just installed the brass throttle valve bushing for my 1989 Lincoln. I had to order it online since the Ford Stealership "couldn't find it." The old one literally ...
This shows the removal of a shift cable that broke at the transmission connection point and installation of a new cable. This seems to be a common problem ...
thanks for the video. this is getting done to my '03 aviator on tuesday.
Great vehicle hardly ever hard a problem with it and still cruising smooth
at 161,000 miles. this truck have never left me on the side of the road.
when i turn the key i know its a guarantee this truck is ready to roll.
If you don't mind me asking, how much was that cable alone from the dealer?
I'm having that same problem at the moment and might end up doing it myself
on my 03 Aviator.
Hi, I'm thinking of importing an 88 Town Car here to Australia, then
getting her converted to right hand drive. I'm looking for an original and
good condition Black one. Is there anything major to be aware of with these
old girls? (other than astronomical fuel prices lol)
I'm 19 and I own an almost perfect '88 Town Car Signature Series. Quarter
sized surface rust over the right front wheel well. Everything else is
perfect. I love this car. :D Gonna get it fixed and repainted when I get
some extra money. (laid-off)
i watched this when i'm all depressed so here's a dreary comment. i hate
not having a car or a job so i can buy one, i miss my z28 even though i
needed to rebuild the trans and get the fan thing fixed :(
nah the relay fucker had to be plugged in by hand every time i started the
thing, if i remembered i'd have no problems, if i forgot i'd have a little
steam as i pulled into the tire kingdom parking lot.
