I was on the City of Midland 41 a few times. It was a cheap way of getting
away from the heat and bypassing Chicago. Sorry to hear it is no more. I
was always amused by the availability of 'sleepers' and playing pool or
pinball when the ship was listing in the middle of the lake.
@carminefast77 This is correct. She was towed from her former location at
Detour, MI to the Soo on Tuesday December 20. Scrapping to begin
immediately after removal of asbestos.
The Spartan is actually a parts ship for the badger.

+Cloud Jockeys Yea when I was a kid my family went from Luddington to Milwaukee on the Sparta twice and before I die I intend on doing it again but I want to gr8 a storeroom the next time I wish that the trip took a lot longer though!! They belonged to C&O Railroad in the 70s when we went!! Boy it sure looks cold in this video!!! I live in Florida now But I grew up in Temperance Michigan and I don't know how I used to handle the cold!!

GTW Car Ferrys 1920-1978
These photos were taken by my dad in the 1920's and by me in 1978. There were four railroads that ran car ferries. The Detroit & Mackinaw which operated the ...
@kreriver It is true the Milwaukee sank in a gale in 1929. But the GTW
needed a replacement for the Milwaukee. The GTW bought a extra carferry off
the Ann Arbor & renamed it the "City of Milwaukee". The City of Milwaukee
is docked at Manistee Mich 40 miles North of Ludington as a museum open for
tours.
@kreriver Thanks. This is an example of what happens when find the correct
info after you post the video= too late. I didn't want to redo the video
with MSmovie maker because it takes me 30 minutes to make & edit.
Crossing Lake Michigan in the middle of October is a bit of a gamble as far as wind, waves, etc. I lost on that bet. It was a bit rougher than I had hoped. Oh well!
Did the 'City of Midland 41' a few times. A very nice and cheap (at the
time - 1980) way to spend a day. It's amazing what Lake Michigan is like
when you are out in the middle of it. Miss it ..
+Lee Graf You may then be interested to see another video of mine, from a couple years ago. City of Midland, 41, was converted to a barge. I saw her being pushed through the Sturgeon Bay ship canal. Very sad to see a good ship used like that, but maybe it is better than having her broken up completely. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d3MELBTb-qo
Andy, that was a fascinating look at a great lakes ship! Apparently you
made it across safe and sound! I certainly can see why truckers would want
to take this ferry rather than to drive around the lake! The inside looks
cozy with very nice accommodations. Thanks for taking us along on your
excursion!
John, IMHO this is really the best way to go. From where I live (near Green Bay) the drive to Ludington would be about 450 miles, including Milwaukee, Chicago and Gary. Or 50 miles to the Ferry and then a 60 mile sail. To me its a no brainer, but this time the weather just was not cooperative.
Thank you for that Curmudgeon66! That was Awesome... especially for us land
locked Texans ..I love Ships anyway... I should have been a Pirate... Have
a good day and Thanks again... :)
Glad you enjoyed watching it. I usually enjoy the ride, but for some reason this time I just felt a little . . . .

Well I'm here looking through an old picture frame, just waiting for the
perfect view.
What I want to know is, how did these young guys know what I know 30 years
later???
Bowie was good but he couldn't lace Ferry's boots, and he knew it.
Roxy were at the top from the very start, it took Bowie years, plus a lot
of dodgy recordings, before he made it. He did always have good things to
say about them though, so fair play to him, and he did release some great
albums.
+John F Dude, Bowie is what made Roxy possible. Dude. Bowie bashing, say it isn't so, Really?!? also look at Ferry and look at Jones, gee why did that take so long and some one had to work 12x harder to get taken seriously? really dude?
+The 5th I was being sarcastic you fuckin' idiot! It was the drummer, Paul Thompson, and he was meant to be a "strong man", complete with black eye. I am not trying to denounce Bowie, I have seen the man umpteen times live, I have most of his releases and have been listening to his music since the early 70's. You said he "shat all over Roxy", whatever that means. Btw, you never answered any of the questions I asked you about him, as I said you were not there when it mattered, so forget it...grow up.
+John F You don't know which one wore the cave man outfit well get back to me when you know anything about the sort of outfits the band your defending wore, then when you've done proper research about Roxy Music get back to me with the weak attempts at trying to denounce Bowie, keep in mind by the way I like Roxy Music I just think your statement was ridiculous implying they were bigger and made more impact than Bowie, bullshit they did.
+The 5th Deary me, and what one was that...go on, enlighten me. For fuck's sake get your facts right if you are going to start an argument with someone whose musical knowledge and taste is vastly superior to your own. As for Bowie, how many times have you seen him live? Do you have all his albums? Do you know everything about him? When did you start listening to him? C'mon, gimme another laugh before you piss off...arsehole!
+John F lol Er no like most glam bands Roxy Music went for the assorted dress ups look and one of them was a cave man, you really should know about the band your defending...
+The 5th Did I say that? You are thinking of The Spiders from Mars (embarrassing name or what) brickies in drag. Is that the best you can come up with? I bet you love Gary Glitter as well and Elton John, well, your Daddy does.
+John F lol I love the fact you think Roxy Music are hard, hahahahahahha guys dressed in flares ad caveman suits, oh yeh what a bunch of tough cookies.
+The 5th Yes but Roxy were straight, Bowie admitted he was gay/bi. Eno and BF shagged more women that you've rifted cum bubbles, you thick poof...a 34 year old saddo with a gay Dr. Who avatar...good grief! LOL!
+John F You're conceited for dismissing Bowie under Roxy Music yeh, you're a complete dickhead for even considering Roxy Music a rather average 70s pop group ever made the impact David Bowie did. Get real.
+The 5th LOL, yes well done, I am conceited, especially when I am dissing idiots, lol. You don't have a clue, ya retard. Stick to the shite you know best, probably Oasis, Blur and all that other crap you scumbags listened to. Now piss off back into your Tardis, arsehole!
34?..."pop music"?...you are too young to remember when these bands were at their peak and obviously don't really know what you are talking about...because you weren't there. Yes, Bowie probably does get more references than Roxy because he was out long before them and it seems more "hip" to name check him. But take it from me, Roxy influenced just as many people as he did...do some research and you will see, ok? Good man.
+John F Not deaf I'm 34 years old and have been listening to pop music for about 20 plus years of that and in all that time I have heard more references to the genius of Bowie than I have even heard references to Roxy Music at all so yeh, Roxy Music might be a good band I like them, that's not my point, my point is your assertion they somehow were better or bigger than Bowie is absurd. Bowie leaves the bigger legacy, the only legacy I ever hear in reference to Roxy Music is that Brian Eno came out of them.
+The 5th "I don't hear people referencing the genius of Roxy Music, ever"...really? You are obviously deaf as well as an idiot! What about Punks, New Romantics, etc. etc. etc the list is endless. Now Piss off.
+John F It doesn't matter how long Bowie took to have success when he did he made an impact ten times bigger than all of Roxy Music's entire career combined only an idiot woul think otherwise. I don't hear people referencing the genius of Roxy Music, ever... Bowie gets footnoted constantly
+The 5th Don't talk pish, Roxy made it big from the word go, even without the help of a hit single. Bowie had been around for years before he made it, 60's bands, hippy acoustic crap, his early stuff is hilarious. I think "Ziggy Stardust" was his 7th album! Then he did his Eno tribute act as well. As I mentioned earlier, the guy was good and he always said positive things about Roxy but definitley a classic case of Emperor's New Clothes. You are kidding yourself. I am answering a Dr. Who fan....good grief!
+John F Pff get real, Bowie shat all over Roxy Music who you trying to kid, yourself?

pictures from my trip on the s.s. badger...it's a ship that travels across lake michigan from manitowoc, wisconsin to ludington, michigan. the song is by jeff beal.
Thank you. I should have mentioned that I am a Michigander now living in
the Pacific Northwest. My favorite memories of that area take place on the
Lake Michigan shoreline. I remember, in particular, wandering the dunes and
trails in the state park just north of Ludington. The Pacific Northwest has
much to offer but there's nothing to beat the Lake Michigan shore on a
beautiful day.
nice...i wandered those dunes not too long ago. i'm from ohio and love
getting up there whenever i can. we spend a week in the upper peninsula
every summer.
