Michigan Tech: Improving steerable ankle-foot prosthesis for amputees
Dr Mo Rastgaar and Evandro Ficanha talk about the testing of steerable ankle-foot prosthesis for amputees at Michigan Tech. An evaluation platform is being ...
When turning, first the ankle turns slightly (let's say to the right) prior
to placement, and as the opposite leg swings forward, the ankle joint
straightens, causing the body to turn to the right. With human physiology,
other muscular maneuvers may occur (knee bends, increased leg separation,
hip maneuvers, etc).
And it's directed by the brain, largely w/o conscious thought (other than
determining where you choose to walk to), based on (1) visual input
(particularly in mountain climbing), (2) other sensory input (touch), (3) a
database of prior walking/ climbing/ dancing (et al), and in the case of
dancing, keeping to the beat (auditory input).
Yes, this can be done with an artificial leg, but NEVER at this
physiological level.
