This observatory sat behind Phillips school. I went to school there mid
1950's, teacher Mr Ralph Corman. The observatory back than was already
grown over with trees.
Man, the history around here always intrigues me. The saplings are still there haha, just a little more grown. Thanks for sharing some history +Luv2Cruz49 !
+Interesting Ted Teacher of school Ralph Corman, //www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=46834093 The area of land the school set on was on the east side of observatory, next to Knghtridge road side (Hwy446). I remember little room on A stone fence from native field stones was built around two side of school. School was heated by coal stoker furnace with entrance on east side. A driveway where bus pick us up was on west side of school. Bus name was Floyd's bus, a farmer that lived on South Friendship Rd. A large play field on west side of school next to Lampkins Ridge road and behind the school next to observatory. Behind the school were two out houses, one for girls and one for boys. No indoor plumbing in this school. Occasionally boys and girls ventured across the stone wall to the observatory. The observatory had saplings all around the observatory. I attended school there 1st (1955) thru 6th grade (1960) and only remember a couple times anyone went inside the observatory.
I know this place well. The old Phillips school used to be on this property
even after the observatory was built the school was in use. It was a one
room school then a two room school. Many of my family members attended the
school.
