+Peppe Ddu one more possibility i would like to point out is that in the future temporary jobs will become a norm. a new business will start out with an all human staff to figure out which actions produce which results and as the business grows the repetitive jobs done by the temps will be replaced with automated robots/machinery. the majority of the workforce hence will be transient.shifting from one new company to another as their former employer moves up the ladder of automation.

+john smith Precisely my point.Automation creates new possibilities, people just have to retrain to compete in the new marketplace.Sure, some of those who used to carry "stuff" around will be laid off, but some of those will go into other areas, some may even realize that now they can afford to start their own clinic (as they don't need much personnel and use the same robots instead) and force the big guys to make things cheaper.In short it's a win-win for everyone.

+Peppe Ddu im not a Luddite. i have no problems with robots/automation replacing humans. im just pointing out the obvious. as for the maintaining part. those are only a few workers who will themselves be using a shitload of tech to do their jobs quicker and more efficiently. automation wont create more jobs in the conventional sense. having said that however i do think automation will create more small businesses as the cost of capital investment will come down due to newer and cheaper technology and the products these businesses create will be good enough to compete with the products of major corporations.

+john smith So perhaps we should stop sending emails because we want to save the employees at the post office.Or perhaps we should stop using the web because we want to keep the newspaper business alive.Technology increase efficiency and opens up the door for new people to replace the ones who cannot adapt.Some employees may be laid off, but sure those robots needs maintenance, development and support, and those things needs to done by humans.
