Surprised to hear about Mercedes probably running the same aero package at
Monza. That rear wing looks huge... Of course I have no idea really, but I
was thinking they would run something extremely different at Monza (all
teams not only Merc of course)
So with next years regulations stating that the noses will have to have a
more pleasing structure, that probably means that all the cars will either
look like the Mercedes at Spa or the current Redbull/Marrusia. On a side
note, anyone think we will see twin exhausts to amplify the sound a bit ?
As far as noses, the Mercs "U" nose won't be such an advantage, I think Ferrari's shape will be most likely. Certainly there wont be the Mac style thin finger noses. However dont think they will be pretty, I've drawn a few extreme ones and they can be just as odd looking!Twin exhausts might help, shorter exhausts or exhaust pointed near the track might help reverberate a bit more noise. But turbos will always be quieter. Remember is not the VOLUME, but the sound. The new engines are so interesting to listen in the flesh, with all the whistles and gurgles. TV doesn't do them justice.
nope. it's not the number of exhausts. it's the amount of energy being wasted out of the tailpipe. these engines are much more efficient, they simply have less energy available to make noise.
+Parkie355 Banning the fuel flow limit won't make things better, it will make them worse actually. If we didn't have that rule you'd see drivers gunning it for the first half of the straight and coasting for the 2nd half because they'd have to watch their overall fuel consumption. The fuel flow limit is there to ensure a steadier pace.
Twin exhausts might help. But the reason the cars only have one exhaust is because the teams used the exhaust to produce downforce. The FIA banned twin exhaust as part of the reduced downforce package.
Yeah, the fuel flow limit only lows the cars to rev to a maximum of 10,000 mabye 11,000. I hope they either ban the fuel flow limit or increase it so that noise will improved. Do love the turbo whistle though.
The volume of noise isn't the problem, the decibel scores are almost the same as V8's but the lower pitch doesn't seem as noisy as a scream. The only way to improve the pitch would be to increase the working range of the V6 back to 18-19 thousand rpm. That may come with time.
