The trails you see at take off and landing are from the wingtip and flap vortices. The reduction in pressure and temperature across each vortex can cause water to condense and make the cores of the vortices visible. Common for take off and landing. Different to the contrails you see from high altitude planes which is from the engines.

You can't have noticed the smaller fuel leak today 22/2/2010 which my daughter pointed out to me as we were landing at Birmingham from the same place as yesterdays bigger one on the plane which had been "repaired overnight". (Because the jet was on the left and the leak on the right).

Yes, more excitement in two days flying than you really want. We were so glad to get on it on Sunday as it was running 3h late into Turin after the snow in Birmingham delayed its takeoff.

The fighter jet is a Mirage 2000-5 of the 1/2 Cigogne Fighter Group, they are part of French air protection and are always armed with live ordenance "in case of".

Yes, I saw the usual vapour trail from between the flaps on the left hand wing too as we landed.
