+Boosted98gsx i use about 1 pound chunks of common carp or smallmouth buffalo fished on bottom in the turns in the rivers, i use 100 pound braid mainline and a 3/0 bronze treble hook. my leader is 28 inches of 105 # single strand wire.

@DavidGraham47 Thanks for the comment. I know how they can gulp air to breathe on the surface similar to a porpoise. I see what you are saying but these particular gar were hitting shad in the foam that were stunned after going over a dam upstream. The gar were hitting the shad sideways, turning, then swallowing them.

When gar break the surface like that they are not feeding... Gar have a swim bladder that operates as a primitive lung, allowing them to frequently come to the surface to gulp air... essentially they breathe air.
