Judy Roderick played this song before the Dead or Hot Tuna. She followed the original version of the song, found by the Lomaxes in 1934 from an 18 year old ...
Funny the circuitous ways we now and then come across something wonderful.
I first heard of Ms. Roderick tonight when I read a film review by Harlan
Ellison in an old, rather mildewed copy of Fantasy and Science Fiction
Magazine from 1991. He was reviewing The Rocketeer, a film I found
delightful, and so I gave the review a glance though I usually skip them
and go straight for the short stories. Mr. Ellison mentioned Ms. Roderick
among a list of blues musicians he particularly admired, calling her
astonishing, and including her in a list with luminaries like Django
Reinhardt and Gerry Mulligan. Ellison was right - astonishing is the word
for Ms. Roderick's talent and more, her artistry, especially since she
seems to have been largely overlooked at the time of her recordings.
Thank you for posting this.
+Jennifer Karlsson I'm so glad you found this. I just found her about a year ago. I am taking the liberty to send 2 different types of songs she sings. They are both incredible. I have a hard time listening to Brother Can You Spare a Dime it is so strong/bitter. I'm not sure of the word I am looking for...perhaps intense. I love the other song...it makes me smile. If you listen, I hope you enjoy. My best, Moppethttps://youtu.be/ZbyCH04-I_Ehttps://youtu.be/apbqgp0nZIk
My son has just bought this for my 76th birthday! How can I have missed her
all those years ago. Perhaps because she overlapped with the great Baez and
others and made so few records herself. She also looks like all my
girlfriends from the late 50's and early 60's Oh well dream (and listen) ON
+ray hodgin What a wonderful gift!!! I just found here this past year. What amazes me is she did songs that others made famous later. She had a wonderful talent for finding great music...along with her great music. I missed her also. Happy belated birthday!
+CAIYROS I can see this song has touched you. It is brilliant. I love Judy Roderick & I just found her this year. She did many songs before other groups made them famous. Thanks for listening & being kind enough to leave a message, MoppetShe is in my Playlist called BLUES - Female on my Channel. She is also in my BLUES - Country Blues Playlist. Her "Brother Can You Spare a Dime is incredible". In fact, I will look it up & put the link back here. Her voice tears me up on that one. https://youtu.be/apbqgp0nZIk
+Stefan Wirz I just tried to follow you on google+ but it wouldn't let me. I do that so when I tag people they can see. I tagged you, but it's now going to show since google won't work right now. I will try again tomorrow. I'm adding your link to all of her songs I have posted. Thanks so much. Wishing you a lovely afternoon & evening, Moppet
+Stefan Wirz Thank you for your link. I'm going to post it in my comments section, but will credit you. For some reason, it was put into my spam & I just saw it. I think sh is absolutely brilliant! I appreciate your info, Moppet
+ralphyboy25 Thanks so much for your nice comment. It means a lot to me...some of my videos have zero comments from 2011, so I am sincere when I write this. My best, Moppetp.s. If you like Judy, I have a Playlist called "BLUES - female" on my Channel. It has artists from Odetta, Bonnie Raitt, Judy Roderick...you just have to sort through. If you like blues, I have a lot of Blues! Old Blues/DeltaBlues is under BLUES - Country Blues. If you ever explore, I hope you find some treasures. (I spent almost 2 weeks organizing my music to make it easier to find what you like).
+MyMoppet52 Thank you for posting. Judy Roderick is new to me, and sounds great. Such a soulful mood. I followed +Helen Agnadopoulou here. And you are right, rob van unnik does have some good music on his channel. Cheers.

This is a perfect example of why I hate the media. They blow everything out
of proportion to try and scare people into buying their BS product. The guy
was simply a collector who had lived too long to be able to take care of
his property. He was possibly in the hospital for end of life reasons. Put
the juveniles in prison where they belong. They are the only ones who did
anything wrong. His collection looked very nice. The broomhandle Mauser
looked very fine.
+Adolf Kitler I guess he only had 59 because he got sick and hadn't been able to get out and pick up number 60 yet. What's the big deal about 59 guns? I agree with Wyoming Horseman, it's a good start. I would like to have some of the ones they showed. Namely, all of the including the Knight's Templar Sword. These libs are incredible, "He had 59 GUNS!!!!?????" So What?
+Adolf Kitler In Wyoming we call 59 guns a good start.
