Jonathan Klinger's coworkers thought he was bluffing when he said he wanted to drive a Ford Model A every day for a year -- including winter ... in northern ...
The only car I currently have is a 1970 Dodge Dart Swinger, and it is a
beautifully spartan automobile. It has no power steering and sports 9" drum
brakes all around, it has no A/C and crank windows. Of course, it is backed
up by the venerable and indestructible 225 Slant 6 and Torqueflite
transmission. The way I see it, there are just that many fewer points of
failure on that car. It is 45 years old and I would be willing to bet that
in 45 years from now, it will still be running like new. I don't believe
that I could say that about a new car made today.
Until a few months ago a 66 dart wagon was my only ride. Slant 6 225. It let me down far less often than the Volvo that it replaced. As a bonus I knew there were no car thieves that knew how to drive a 3 on the tree. Something I can't fathom is why people have a hang up about A/C and power gizmos. I know heat. I grew up a hill away from the Central Valley in California then lived in Dallas for 7 years. I had a car with A/C once and I never turned it on. They're the cause of a summer cold. There is a good argument for disc brakes though.
+Luke Marine Nice man. I'd like to own a Dart with a /6 someday. Right now I have a '54 Plymouth Belvedere and a '70 Dodge A-108 that is basically my daily driver. It has a 318 in it. No power anything! Just give it some gas and oil. Hell with it. Hoping to travel the country in it in a few weeks.
I always laugh at people when they say they can't live without "insert
modern convenience here". People survived just fine before without it.
What's so wrong with doing the same now? I have no problem using antique
machines over new crap.
+Lee Goins There is a whole plethora of degrees obtainable from American and other universities that one could hold...and still not know Jack. Especially, if you are a negative action student.
+halloranedwardAre you fucking retarded? that's not even close to what i said. Just because it has to pass a certain law doesn't mean it's "government designed". That's like claiming your house is "government designed" because it has to pass building safety codes for your city. NO!!! The architect, and the engineer design the house to a specific code. However they reach that code is COMPLETELY up to them. BTW, the government DOES own the roads. Because WE are the government. We pay taxes to the government. Which they then use to fix said roads. And yes, it IS legal so long as you don't use it. For example, a nitrous oxide system? COMPLETELY legal on a street legal car, so long as you don't use the system on the street (race only). Those blue HID headlights. Again, COMPLETELY LEGAL, so long as you don't use them on the street. Sorry for the long post, but if you don't understand by now, you're obviously too stupid to find your way out of a plastic bag. This is over.
+salemcripple in other words, if you want to drive on public roads 9 which govt does not own) it has to be a govt designed/engineered manufactured auto. see? you just admitted it is a crime to make an american car. you may not sell one , saying "it's legal as long as you don't use it" is silly.
I provided the government webpage with the paperwork required to have a home built car titled and made legal, with instructions on how to do so. That's all the proof that i need that halloranedward is full of shit. And as i said, i know people who have done it. All one has to do is look up "home made car" on youtube as proof. If it has a license plate, it has a title and a VIN. Which means it IS legal! +flight2k5
+halloranedwardIt is NOT crime to make a home made car. You can build any car you want, and drive it! So long as it stays off road you don't have to meet any laws whatsoever. To drive it on the road, it's still NOT a crime. You just need to build it to current safety and emission standards, to which we all voted for. The government even tells us how to make a home made car legal //www.oregon.gov/odot/dmv/pages/vehicle/assembled.aspx if it was a "federal crime" to build a home made car, why would they have a website telling you how to do so? Also, i PERSONALLY know of three people that have done it. Built cars, have them 100% titled, 100% insured, have VIN numbers, and are 100% road LEGAL!
+Michael B that is correct. it is a federal crime for anyone ( including tesla) to manufacture an american automobile. of course tesla can "manufacture and sell" anything they want, they could sell crack if they wanted, because they are a fully govt owned monopoly. they make cars that cost you 1,200 bucks more than they charge for them.
+halloranedward Any car built for the American market, or road must meet Federal standards. Tesla motors has meet those standards, and can "manufacture and sell" their cars.
+Lee Goins damn, it has been a federal crime to design, engineer, manufacture, and sell any american car in the US since 1970, you would go to prison for selling one. call the DMV and ask
+halloranedward damn, their bought and sold all the time...it has a VIN # and it's street legal. Why don't you just call the DMV and ask....SMHPlease go troll elsewhere...
+halloranedward if that's true, please explain how I built a sandrail from the ground up, put insurance and tags on it and drive it 7 months out of the year??Oh yeah, with 2 Master degrees, I do know Jack Shit.
A feature of this car that really surprised me was that it was a two door car where the rear windows could be rolled down. That's an old convenience that a lot of modern cars could really do with.
+MistaCappuccinoand they have not gone away ! government still hasthe authority to charter or own monopolies, ford fought and won. lot's of other car businesses got the benefit of ending the trust, and tech exploded ,
+MistaCappuccinoI gotcha ! all good ! did you know that for a while the model "T" WAS illegal ? ford fought for and won the right to sell an auto without paying a royalty to a govt chartered monopoly !!! //en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Association_of_Licensed_Automobile_Manufacturers
+halloranedward Yes, but originally you stated the Model A is against the law, which made me think that you meant that it was originally against the law and still is to have a Model A. Confused me =P
+MistaCappuccinoI don't know how ignorant a person can be,.... yes, I did know that the model "A" was built before 1970, which is the year it became a federal crime to build an american vehicle, if you attempted to build and sell a vehicle like the model "A" or any other vehicle other than what has been designed by the government , you would go to prison ,
+MrHillbillyjoethat is incorrect. since the year 1970 it is against the law to manufacture any auto that does not meet federal specifications, you can buy this antique and drive it ( with insurance and registration, ) however it is a federal crime to design it, manufacture it or sell it new, now do you understand ? ,,,,,, I would recommend the book " pioneers engineers and scoundrels" by Beverly Rae Kimes If you would like to learn jack shit about anything.
+halloranedward You don't know jack shit about anything do you. You can drive what ever you want, whenever you want as long as it has insurance on it and current registration.
+halloranedward What an uneducated statement. It is legal, as long as it's registered properly. If it wasn't legal, why would he be driving it every day for a year?

Please LIKE this video to show your support! Maintaining your car is one of the most important aspects of keeping it running strong year round. Find out my ...
Hey man I have a few questions, you live in CA so how do you register your
car every year? Since you have to smog it every year or before you sell it.
your car won't ever pass visual inspection since your engine bay is
probably all aftermarket + your emissions how do you bypass? Almost every
after market turbo set up in CA is for off-road use only. Idk if you have
ever been pulled over but cops look under your hood if they see any
aftermarket part and you don't have a compliance sticker or permit for that
mod your car registration will be suspended until you put it back to stock
and if the cop feels like it he will impound it, I know this from
experience so how do you get around all these problems??? Please lmk (I
know if your car is less than 5years old you don't have to smog it, if
that's the case alright)
+genesis coupe I see. Yeah if that was the case where I'm from in SD then I probably wouldnt heavily modify my car either. Not worth getting crushed or impounded.
Alright, not a risk I am willing to take my genesis coupe has all bolt on parts with a tune. So I can easily bring my car back to stock in a matter of hours. But that's as far as I'm willing to go. Just gonna have to buy a more powerful car I guess. Repeat offenders here in my county get their vehicles confiscated or worst crushed.
+genesis coupe its a risk you take driving a modified car. I have all the same mod's minus the turbo kit so its not like he's the only person driving around with a heavy modified car. come to think about it for the 8 years i've owned evo's I've only been ref'd once. it helps when you dont "daily" the car. but for people who daily heavily modified cars, your comment is correct.
If he gets pulled over and the cop sees he isn't emissions legal bye bye modded Evo hello suspended registration and back to stock Evo. See if thts not the case my question is how?

American vehicles log more miles than any other. Look it up. The ford 302, Chevy 350, and lastly and leaslty, the dodge 318. American v8 power and cummins and international, and cat and damn, we rock! Yanmar is badass too.
Looks like you guys have a LOT of fun with old cars. Thank you for saving
some of them!
I just subscribed to your channel and am looking forward to all your
videos. I'm from Texas and if I ever make it up there, I'll buy a lot of
spark plugs and some beer for you guys...or a lot or beer and some spark
plugs...your choice! Here's to old iron and keeping it going down the road!
My neighbor had a '53 Kaiser Frazer Manhattan with a 226 straight 6 and a
factory supercharger. The supercharger had a flying duck on it. 3 speed
automatic. 2 tone green, in very nice shape. I was about 12 years old, and
he let me drive it. It was a really cool car.
The way to tell a '47 from a '48 Kaiser is the script. The '47 had
individual letters for K A I S E R whereas the '48 the letters are
connected K_A_I_S_E_R. Early '47s only had 2 bumper guards on the front.
The '47s had the 'Darrin Styled' script on the deck lid and only the early
'48s did. It was brought back on the '51s. Only the earliest '47 Kaisers
have "KAISER" on the hub caps. The rest of the '47 and '48s are simple moon
style with no markings.
+Computer Addic Hi! Thanks for the note... I'll keep going til the Frazer is roadworthy, but I'm not going to restore it. I like it the way it is... besides, then I don't have to worry about it getting scratched. Cheers!
You guys are just so fucking real, still out dragging cars home in the
middle of winter & having a blast. This is quality Red Necking to be proud
of. Cheers from Idaho Mate.
Your an idiot. The leaf is electric it has no MPG associated with it, and
the people who fall for that kind of crap are just as stupid. I've had many
VWs and none of them had issues, you also never said how OLD the car was
when things broke on it. 5 year old cars have things break on them due to
age regardless of miles. a 20k mile 8 year old car still has 7 winters and
8 summers of temp changes on its running belts and other parts, did u ever
think about that? Things break.
wv jetta is not riliable and the diesel engine sound like ass pop pop pop
pop and only gets 29mpg the prius is quier has the espace of the fusion and
the most important gets 51 MPG reability is exelent and the air
conditionating works with the battery so you can have sex whith your
girlfriend and the engine is off nobady nows you are there i make my point
think about, pop pop pop pop pop or ssssssssssssss
I've owned VWs since 2000 and I've yet to have one stand me for something
that broke of the manufacturing. I don't count busting an oil pan on the
parts that fell off the Semi in front of you a failure of engineering. All
of our VWs have been flawless with over 100k miles put on each in less than
4 years time. Exception vehicles, the diesels have been the best of them
all with fuel economy.
What kind of car did you get? I have a non clean diesel and it's less noisy
than many of the SUVs I work with. MIne has returned 40-42 lifetime, I
routinely drive it 740 miles - non stop - on a single tank. Thats 50MPG. In
town the worst has been 38. The Prius is a joke in comparison. I have 100k
miles and my car has never failed to start nor has it stranded me.
Poor reability? You got to be kidding me? Don't listen to what people say i
bought a golf (not diesel) and it's straight from Germany it's year 2000
and i bought it 5 years ago i still drive it today with no problems
whatsoever..Now then ones that r built in mexico are the problem..U can
tell by the WIN number and onthe door side where the car was built...
there is nothing "new" and there is no efficiency since a car stills burns
gas, now the future generations have to pay what old consumists people did
to the planet, please "BIG BRAND COMPANIES" get rid of the massive
consumption of gas, break the bonds between oil companies and automobile
companies. Do not disappoint people with hibird expensive cars.
My uncle bought a camry that was on transmission #2 by 47,000 miles. A bad
water pump and a bad strut are NOTHING in comparison. There was no 1989
TDI. Did you mean 1998 TDI? How fast did he get to 50k miles? If the car is
8 years old the water pump was due; as was the timing belt. If it was in a
year that's excessive wear. Give us more details.
@VALsacount2 not all plains that you've mentioned are used everyday, but
yes they spread and burn fuel, but lets start with the most conventional
and most used, so please, convergence will turn against oil companies and
the incompetency of automobile factories will be the best starting point to
make this possible.
I'm 6'3" and over 240. I drive a Jetta TDI and with my seat set to my
liking I can sit behind it. I'd say the VW or the Audi, NOT The Prius...
not sat in a 2010 but the 2nd gen models (09-earlier) had horribly short
seats that put my knees in the dash in the passenger seat.
Whats the weight of the boat? If it's less than 6300LB my Jeep CRD can pull
it + 3 adults and get over 20MPG. You don't need an H1 for a commuter car
and this video was about daily drivers/commuters NOT special needs such as
"I need something to pull my large ass boat."
I've had a Jetta TDI and now own a Prius. The TDI is a great engine, but VW
doesn't have the reliability of a Toyota. The VW has lots of torque with I
miss, but the Prius isn't too bad either since it uses the electric motor
to assist the engine in fast exceleration.
Also the Leaf has a 100 mile range *tops*, my Jetta has up to 800 mile
rage. How is the smaller, less safe in a crash, electric better? A: It
isn't, but you wouldn't know because you believe in marketing HYPE over
science FACT.

1970 Chevy Chevelle , Crager SS , Back in the 70's there were these two
brothers. one had a 57 Chevy Belair Black [post] and the other had a 67 GTO
[ Powder Blue HT]. both had the crager mags on the cars.. i was only 14
years old and that is when i started getting interested in cars every
Saturday they used to wash& wax , fix the engine They lived on a hill. use
to park their cars in front of their apartment. [tight together] with one
family car in back and one family car in front. one morning the 57 chevy
was gone. [stolen] they must have jacked it up and pulled it out . rolled
down the hill . the 67 GTO was totaled because the brother was drag racing
and hit a pole . lucky he walked away. those were some great times .
+Pistol Pete My Dad had a 71 Chevy Chevelle. i remember the seat belts in that. use to clean the car. the web says 1966 they passed the law that cars must have seat belt. but then i was to young to know
When did seat belts start ? I remember driving to Rockaway Beach up Cross Bay Blvd in Queens.. Once you pass thru Howard Beach it is a straight away... Always remember seeing the residual wrecks from someone "eating a tree" as they said...
Mustang GT (Muscle Cars Pt1) - Everyday Driver
Our long awaited showdown between Mustang and Camaro gets rolling with the Mustang GT. The guys toss around the rivals under ominous skies. And argue.
BOSS 302 , LIVE REAR AXLE , its the excuse cuz you cant drive ,and if your
drag racing a live rear axle > IRS , people swap the IRS for live axle ,
its lighter and can be made to handle too
Well when the 2015 comes out it'll be pretty impressive. They're already aiming at the boss 302's lap times for the standard GT model. Should be interesting to see what they can achieve when they've fine tuned everything all these years.

There is a Facebook Group called Kaiser/Fraser Automotive Fan Club. They
are posting all sorts of manuals and bulletins/factory letters on line.
Thought you might be interested. Cheers and our best to Stella!
Hopefully I will see the car go through Strathmore one day! Since you
mentioned it has a Continental flathead engine, I remembered we have an old
caterpillar forklift with a straight four Continental flathead engine.
Those things sure need the rpm's if you want to get the power out of them.
Well worth the wait! Dash looking slick in that green. Somethin tells me
you CWM guys would like my '54 Nash-Kelvinator refrigerator, it ain't no
sewing machine but it keeps my steaks nice and cold.
+coldwarmotors I'm repairing, currently, the dryer from 1998 which sits next to the maytag washer (A806) from 1974, which only had its first repair (to my knowledge, and it was still working), in the spring of 2014. rebuilt timer...decided to treat it to new belts, a new starter for the fluorescent light and a lid switch only to get the light working in the bin.
+RanchWagon Forde I have a General Electric fridge in the basement...i believe from 1959, unless the date/serial number scheme is wrong...It is old, either way and works great without ANY trouble, probably like your gem.
Its awesome you are going to daily a 49 Frazer! I am a huge fan of orphan
cars and its great to see you putting it back on the road where it belongs.
I am planning to daily my 59 Studebaker Silverhawk, its in a lot worse
shape than your car, but its been a lot of fun working on it. I just got it
running and driving again.
As you don't care for the white, in the spring have Dean do a clean up on
it like he did on the Plaza the maybe paint the sides and the left read
door like you did on the 58 and 59 Chevys. Also on the carpeting, take it
to a commercial carpet cleaner. I have done that more than once. The smell
maybe what's under the carpet. My dogs say give Stella their best.
+yost123 Stel says hi! I may or may not tidy up the body after I get the car roadworthy; it wouldn't take too much. Unfortunately, the grille is damaged and it wouldn't be worth painting the car unless i had a better grille. No hurry, though; I don't mind it the way it is. The carpet was totally rotten and is going to be replaced, along with the rest of the interior. Cheers!
